While Channel 4 News at lunchtime is relatively new, C4 has had some kind of news and current affairs output around about midday ever since it started broadcasting at that time of day.
The lunchtime bulletin was the replacement for Powerhouse or whatever the lunchtime political programme was called laterly.
I'm an admirer of Channel 4 News. But, in truth, the audience at 12 o'clock was very small and the audience for More 4 News so small you wondered why they bothered.
These are desperate times and while I'm naturally sorry to see cuts, I'd rather see the lunchtime bulletin dropped than see the main edition of Channel 4 News weakened.

I'm not sure exactly how it 'certainly' weakens anything. Ignoring whether it'll actually prove to be true or not, I don't think 'axing one bulletin to allow resources to be focused on the flagship bulletin' is really a difficult sell, and I doubt it will really weaken the perception of anything.
It's arguably though these cut to protect the 7pm bulletin will still weaken it in the short term at least, and certainly weaken the perception of it.
