Channel 4 is in discussions about a possible move into regional news.

The broadcaster, which is seeking to prove its public value in order to secure additional funding, has held talks internally and with ITV about the possibility.

It suggests regional news would run on More4 rather than the main Channel 4 network. Since More4 has no regional transmission facility, unlike Channel 4, AFAIK, this sounds like a kite-flying non-starter.

An ITV spokesman said: "We welcome the recognition from all sides that the future provision of regional news is severely challenged by the economics of digital switchover.

Why? I simply do not understand this argument!

In its submission to Ofcom's review of public service broadcasting, Channel 4 noted that its national news programme relied indirectly on ITV regional footage. The Channel 4 News is made by ITN, which is part-owned by and provides news for ITV.

conveniently ignoring the fact that ITV regional news is only made by ITN in London...

They are only suggesting this to try and persuade the powers that be to top slice the licence fee

Well obviously this is part of the discussions if they're taking place.

Would be a very bad move for British TV.

Channel 4 isn't there to be providing the mainstream PSB services - it's there to deal with the over spill. Regional news on C4 can only damage Channel 4 News as a brand - and one of the stations flagship PSB elements.

I've said it several times but if ITV don't want to do regional news, strip them of their regional franchises. Simple.

Can't ofcom just strip ITV of the franchises and stop them from getting licences?

Ofcom agree with and sometimes seem to encourage ITV's dropping of PSB programmes

And how would this work, exactly? C4 only has six regions, unless they're planning on expanding the LEMNUS network.

It will be on More4 anyway.

This is the issues: it would only effect england, as STV and UTV would kick up hell if there tried to move anything.

I know I should not ask but what are and what where ITV PSB commitments?

Where would the place it? ch4 news is the best out of the whole lot on big 5!
