Did you actually watch this edition of C4 News? There was a reason for him being there, he was digesting the speech (which was happening live) and reporting on it. If he hadn't been there, it probably would have been unreported altogether.

Ah, we seem to be talking about different things then. When it's happening live, then it's perfectly justifiable, and even necessary. What I was referencing was the same technique, being used in pre-recorded packages, as though the report was actually happening then, instead of some hours earlier. I don't think that adds anything, where as actual live reporting from an event happening at that moment, is perfectly justifiable.

Most of the "pointless lives" are done because the pre packaged report has been put together in the satellite van at the location.

Doing a quick two way before the package is played out costs next to nothing extra and gives the viewer a sense that it is the most up to date information, compared to a pre rec package that could have been in the can for several hours.

Wasn't even referencing "pointless lives". What I was talking about was an "as-live" piece to camera that had been recorded hours earlier, as part of the pre-recorded package, as though they were literally reporting live, even though they weren't, and often these are done in very close proximity to the event. What would have been so wrong with waiting until the hall quietened down, or doing it from a balcony overlooking, why do they have to be like 6 feet or less from it, that adds nothing.

Speaking about as-live reports, is this something American network news does a lot? Whenever I've seen NBC Nightly News, ABC World News etc, pretty much every report has a package and also the reporter talking from the location about the story, before handing back to the presenter - the way the reporters always hand back to the presenter makes it seem live, but there's nothing else to actually indicate this so is it all an illusion?

It depends. I don't watch ABC World News (too much fluff) but with NBC & CBS they typically cut off if it's recorded or don't do a "thanks" rather "X was reporting" and they typically don't do a two box shot waiting for reporter to do a nod back.

Also, it's worth noting that NBC doesn't always use LIVE bugs for east coast reports. On the occasional west coast feed updates they'll throw up a bug that says LIVE EDT, meaning it was recorded live.

But on the occasions that it's a recorded earlier and they have decided to have the anchor ask a reporter a prearranged question - they'll wait enough time for it to get out.

Incidentally my local NBC station carried an NBC Newschannel (the agency that provides packages from the network and other affiliates for the entire country) report at 11PM for a major breaking news event and they cut to the live report early and they had the Newschannel reporter talking to producers as to what question to be asked.

Who is the woman in the studio who appeared briefly in the closing sequence of tonight's programme?

Shocking error of judgement to cut to Jon Snow in Old Compton Street, to shout the headlines all through the two-minute silence.

Indeed. I don't believe it was necessary to send Krishnan over there.

Throughout the election campaign, Kylie has appeared at the start of the programme to introduce her coverage of the campaign as though she is one of the presenters (I know that she previously presented the now-defunct More 4 News). Why couldn't the same have been done here?

I'm surprised to see Fatima Manji presenting the programme while Jon is in Nice. This must be first time that a Muslim female newscaster has appeared while wearing a hijab on mainstream British television.
