The changes are happening in September. Any idea what'll happen to Sarah Smith when the new guy takes her job?

Matt Frei? About to become Washington DC correspondent for Channel 4 News, I don't know if he will completely take over Sarah Smith's role though

Oh is Sarah currently the Washington DC correspondent? That would make sense, apologies.

Did Matt appear on-screen tonight at all? Also, interesting that ITN use an NBC newsroom. Makes sense since you sometimes see NBC correspondents on ITV.

Missing Matt already at the BBC. What were his motives for the move, do we think? Seems strange after a good 20 odd years at the BBC, but perhaps he just wanted a new challenge. Good luck to Matt!

Purely a theory, but I think he may have been offered Jon Snow's job. Come over to C4, do a couple of years in Washington, and then take over from Jon Snow when he retires. I have no inside information, just pure speculation. But it would be an explanation as to why he quit the Beeb, when he was highly thought of there.

They might have just thrown a lot of money at him too. That usually works.

It's possible (I'm not saying necessarily likely, but possible) that Matt will only be there until the US elections. Clearly quite an asset to have during that time. We also know Matt will be presenting the main news and other Channel 4 News programmes from London - interesting choice to fund the flights and accomodation of Matt Frei when there are three official presenters (and plenty of qualified newsreaders who have been there for years) if you're not pretty set on him becoming a lead presenter.

Article about Matt Frei's departure from BBC to Channel 4 News. Playing away with the Channel 4 mistress?!

NBC's London ops have been at GIR for ages too.

Has Cathy Newman presented yet? I was away last week but note her job title on the website has changed.

I'm slightly disappointed there's been no set update with this fairly radical reshuffle. What they have is good but it is now essentially a decade old.

Also, no sign of Sarah Smith... EDIT - she's now Business Correspondent.

If it's good, why change it? As we have seen with ITV News, they just got their look right, then changed it to the yellow and black look we have now. The C4 News studio still looks fresh and clean. No need for change yet.

But I think it's the kind of inoffensive set which will look good forever... Just some subtle changes like changing the seating (which no longer match the programme's colour palette) would be nice.
