Channel 4 News to hire new presenter

Third high-profile anchor wanted to present show when Jon Snow and Krishnan Guru-Murthy are away

The regular Channel 4 News team of Jon Snow and Krishnan Guru-Murthy will be joined by a new face next year as the programme hires its first new regular presenter for 12 years.

Producers want a third high-profile figure to present the show when Snow or Guru-Murthy is away. The move is likely to prompt speculation that the programme is preparing for the succession process when Snow, now 63, eventually retires.

I see Matt Frei will actually be Washington correspondent, according to Krishnan Guru Murthy's twitter.

"Cathy Newman is new presenter joining Jon and me. Matt Frei is new Washington Corr, Jackie Long Social Affairs Ed"

What's happening to Sarah (Smith?) who he's replacing?

According to Krishnan's twitter, returning to London and getting a lot of time on air (to poorly paraphrase).

Edit: The way the C4 website claims Frei "will lead coverage of the Americas" and "will also join the presenting team" makes me think he might only have the Washington post for the run up and subsequent coverage of the 2012 Presidential race - certainly increasing the quality of C4's presidential race coverage and weakening the BBC's. Is there reason to think Jon Snow might step down some time in 2012 or 2013?

Could it just be that he comes back to the UK every now and then as main holiday cover for the presenting team?
