I'm going to place a bet - someone from BBC World News.

Zeinab Badawi, Kirsty Lang, or Nik Gowing (despite his age) would all be superb.

For Zeinab, is it not a case of 'been there, done that' by now?

That's true, but it's been a long time, about 12 years I think? I would never expect her to return anyway.

Same for Kirsty Lang. As I recall, she presented C4 News from circa 1999-2003.

It is of course possible this third presenter could end up coming from within C4 News as I think with the possible exception of Samira the other hosts are officially in reporting roles.

I've always thought Kirsty Young would be very good on C4 News - and will be interesting to see whether this person is being bought in above or beneath Krishnan as they pave the way for Jon Snow's departure.

Zeinab Badawi, Nik Gowing and Kirsty Lang have all presented C4 News before. I think Nik's stint was possibly even longer than Zeinab's.

More from Broadcast...

Channel 4 News will undergo a restructure in 2011 which will include the introduction of a new presenter, social affairs editor and science editor.

The changes are being introduced partly because of the “creative renewal” taking place at C4. Broadcast reported in September that the news programme was undergoing a “root-and-branch” review.

Other roles being created include an environment correspondent and a sports reporter to boost the flagship news programme’s coverage.

The social affairs editor will join the home news team and be responsible for providing insight on the issues affecting modern Britain.

Meanwhile the science unit on the programme has been restructured creating two roles of a science editor and an environment correspondent.

The environment correspondent will examine how a lower carbon world will be create, while the science editor will be analysing new claims and discoveries.

Presenters Jon Snow and Jon Snow and Krishnan Guru Murthy will also see their roles change slightly.

The second presenter on the programme will start doing heavyweight interviews, chair live discussions and present new planned studio formats. A new presenter will also regularly appear in the programme.

The 7pm news programme will also look to increase participation with the programme through live blogging and try new formats.

C4 News editor, Jim Gray said: “One of the things that distinguishes Channel 4 News is the sense of identity and personality that viewers associate with it. We’re absolutely committed to ensuring that as our content and agenda evolves, those values remain. This time next year, I predict that our programme, line-up and journalism will have evolved in line with news audiences – but it will all still be unmistakeably Channel 4 News.”

C4 head of news and current affairs, Dorothy Byrne, said: “Channel 4 News is the cornerstone of our commitment to public service broadcasting and these changes will build on the successes of 2010. Our experience of launching new online brands such as FactCheck, experimenting with on-air formats and talking to our viewers every single night has given us fantastic insight into what news consumers want.”

Always fear when such changes are suggested, but I guess it looks like they'll dump the secondary presenter in favour of a second presenter with an enhanced role - and perhaps say give them a bigger slot in the second half of the show to host debates etc.

Although I see the logic its not exactly High profiled. I think we are going to be suprized by there choice.

Think about it though - did Jon Snow or Krishnan Guru-Murphy start out big and well known, and are they the most well known newsreaders?

With a show like Channel 4 News, it's not all about being high-profile, it's more about the actual journalistic and presenting skills that are needed.

Pfft...which comedian described Channel 4 News as just Jon Snow reading the Guardian every night? I think it was Marcus Bridgestocke. Anyway, whoever it was he was right....If you can read the Guardian you can be a Channel 4 News reader.
