Just watched it on +1 - I love how Jon Snow's initial reaction was "steady on, chaps!"

I was slightly puzzled as to why that girl thought it would be a good idea to stand right at the front if she was going to refuse to speak when asked a question.

Prompted by a discussion going on in the Five News thread, who do you think would be a good replacement for Jon Snow when he eventually retires?

Personally, I think the powers that be at Channel 4 should think this one through very carefully. I'd be disappointed if they just poached a big name "personality" from another channel in an attempt to boost ratings. Given the nature of the programme, it needs a heavyweight, respected journalist to host it.

Of the existing team, I don't really think Krishnan is all that suitable. He's not a bad presenter, but I don't think he's as skilled at interviewing as Jon. He tends to be a bit too aggressive with interviewees, as though he's trying to make his own point, rather than listening to what they are saying and responding/challenging. If they were going to keep it in-house, my vote would be for Alex Thomson. I think he does a good job when Jon's away.

If they did decide to poach someone from another channel, I could see Dermot Murnaghan fitting into the role. Alastair Stewart would be another good choice. Although, he presented the programme in the 1980s, so I guess that's cheating Smile

Like you, I would prefer Alex Thomson. Nothing against Krishnan GM, but for some reason (I'd have to have a think about why) my gut instinct is to prefer Alex Thomson.

Not sure about Dermot. I really disagree with you on Alastair Stewart, I remember him chairing the leaders debate in the run up to the election and I didn't think he did that particularly well.

It's really hard to imagine anyone else in Jon Snow's shoes, though, he's come to personify C4 News, for me at least, for the moment.

I'd prefer Krishnan to Alex myself, but always though Kirsty Young would actually work well with C4 News - even if what she did at Five was kind of the exact opposite of C4's approach.

Out of the flagship presenters on the BBC1/ITV1 bulletins only George Aligiah I think could work in the role, but is no better than anyone C4 have. Nobody really stands out from News 24 / Sky News either IMO.

They could always poach back an old name...

Ah! Great suggestion! I'd forgotten about Zeinab. Yes, she'd be perfect.

There was a discussion on this evening's program around a circular table - I don't remember seeing this since the Breakfast edition of the show in 2003!

2003? Would that have been about the Iraq war?

Yes, if I recall, C4 News introduced both a breakfast and lunchtime bulletin during the Iraq War. The lunchtime bulletin, of course, remained until 2009 as News at Noon.
