The first edition used to be available here http://home.clara.net/jim.edwards/chanfo.htm but most of the site seems to be offline, so Ive reuploaded it to
http://www.rp-networkservices.com/tvforum/uploads/lacfl.ram (all credit to TV Home who originally encoded it)
Is this based around "Best Endeavours"?
One minute I think so, the next I'm not so sure.... could be to do with the poor sound quality.
[apologies if this counts as uploading library music Confused ]

I have never heard that before. Mind you I couldn't see Channel Four for quite a while after its launch.

I wonder how long that lasted.

Thanks for everyone's help on this. Much appreciated.

I also like the C4 News theme music -- it is recognisable, and shouldn't be changed too much in my opinion. It's like ITV News ditching the bongs and signature piece. I agree in that Five News has dreadful music. As a piece, it is rather nice (except for the screechy climax), but it isn't suitable for a news programme whatsoever.

The thing with Five News is not so much the new music isn't suitable for a news programme, more it isn't suitable for Five News. The original theme - and it's later reworking - suited the apparant fresh style of Five News, but since the new theme has been introduced I think Five News has appeared to be one of the most dated bulletins on the box.

Back on topic to C4 - when they re-launched in 1999 I wasn't wholly impressed with the set and graphics - but they have aged well.

The C4 News set seem to last longer than other stations, and as the contract is up at the end of 2006, maybe we won't see anything new till 2007. I also don't think a drastic makeover of the set is required - just a few changes such as a one-screen videowall (if you know what I mean), getting rid of the pink thing in the middle for something new, and moving the 2nd presenter more into the main set.

On the subject of themes, what was the name of the old original ITN News theme, and where can I get a download?

Same question for the original (and best) ITN News at Ten bong theme. It was excellent, when played by an orchestra, as opposed to the current synthetic version.

Hate to be a smart a*se but, the current look we have now was introduced in November 1998, the only thing they have changed is the straps which have had the odd alteration, but otherwise it hasn't changed and I believe it is now the longest lasting set of titles Channel 4 News has had.

Though I think Channel 4 News isn't one of those News programmes that people watch for the music and graphics, it is more like News for the clever or the more sophisticated amongst us.

The old bongs music was called 'The Awakening' - forgot the composer.

Are you sure? I always thought it was 1998, as I still have a bit of one from 1998 (I think) on video, preceeded by the circles ident, I always thought as well it was to coincide with the new Saturday bulletin, or was that later on in 1999?

I still think that the music, titles and set look lovely, they were strange to begin with but you've got used to them. The only thing that they perhaps could do is to change the colours, perhaps repaint a few things, and as someone previously posted perhaps adding a rear projection screen instead of the bricked video wall, though SKY News still have a bricked one!

The only current thing that does bother me is that the lunchtime bulletins have (or did have unless they've recently changed it) an oval desk. It would be nice if to fit in they could either add a rectangular one, or just use the one that runs down the centre of the studio.

And even though they are just running programmes I'd like to see the return of news updates in the breakfast strand, they could even use old Big Breakfast news update music if they wanted to.
Plus it would show ITN that Channel 4 are more than satisfied by their service that they are asking for them to produce more bulletins for them.

Though if channel 4 were sensible they'd just hand the mornings over to T4 to add a bit of nice morning entertainment around the programmes.
Though the first carnation of RI:SE was the best as it was news with a bit of entertainment and chat, like GMTV for the younger viewer. Where as the 2nd carnation tried too much to be like the big breakfast and failed. They took the decision to change RI:SE too early, I hope it was a lesson for them.

No, it was Jan 1999 - but you are right about it coinciding with the launch of the Saturday bulletin, with C4 launching the Sunday edition a year later.

Five's 30min weekend bulletins didn't last long, but I wonder if they might return when Sky take over in January. There is no reason why Five couldn't have a 30min bulletin every day at 5.30pm.
