I hope the new look for ITV Regional News is more towards the Regional past than the blanket ITV branding. But with ITV now appearing in all the titles of regional news i think its another step to the ITV-isation of the network.
Why should it be? Because you want it to be? Just like you want SMG to call their channels ITV1? I'm quite sure London Tonight know their audience well and have conducted research into how the programme should be. Regional shows such as this are popular the way they are, and always have been - only a few years ago, Granada Tonight had a cookery section! The studio had a kitchen as part of the set.
The difference between national news and regional news programmes is that national news is
hard
news, and people tune in to know what the latest bit of misery is. Regional news shows are completely different - they are more lighthearted, hence you often get outside broadcasts from overenthusiastic reporters about the latest penguins to be born at a local zoo. I would love to see a regional news show which had all the seriousness of the national news - just to see how much it would bomb in the ratings!
And as an aside, I must once again object to your implication that it is only ITV that have competitions on the regional shows. I have seen many on both North West Tonight and Look North. Again - they know their audience!
ITV London News always has competitions, BBC London News hardly has any. I dont like 'magazine shows' but thats just me. Competitions should be kept to entertainment/quiz/kids shows IMO.
Again, you may not share my opinion, thats your right!
Obviously, CNeast are going to have to replace the cardboard backdrop with a new one, as the blue-tint and "four squares" motif are no longer relevant.
But, I hope they maintain a photographic view of Nottingham (albeit teal-tinted, rather than blue-tinted), rather than going for the completely ambiguous backdrop that CNsouth and Meridian have got.
