I may be a new contributor but I've been watching this site for a long time. Worked at Lenton Lane for years, and have recently left (with a pay off). So I know a bit about what goes on.
Yes it's bloody stupid having presenters in Birmingham whilst the reporters etc are in Nottingham, but it's all done for political reasons. The staff in Gas Street have been virtually wiped out by Mr Allen's recent round of cuts, and there would hardly be any reason to justify the continuing existence of that building with just the West news, so ITV have had to artificially inflate its importance by making it the irrational centre of transmission for the East as well.
Otherwise, with nothing else happening, Central News West could have come from a shed anywhere.

It's obviously also part of a long term future plan for the disappearance of ITV local news, because in a few years you can be pretty certain ALL of the midlands news will come from Birmingham. When the Central South region comes up for refurbishment/renewal in a few years what's the betting it will close down, or be "assimilated" into the Birmingham operation.

Technically having East presenters in the West means having to double up on staff such as producers who make content decisions.

On a wider scale, it's interesting to note that when ITV were closing down the whole Lenton Lane site, a large number of Granada/ITV big noises who visited the site for the first time commented to the efffect of "This is a great place, why are they closing it down and keeping the grotty Yorkshire/Granada studios ?"

It's all political. There is no rational sense in anything ITV have done, other than to reduce their costs, reduce their ability to make programmes, and reduce their committment to regional news.

I'm out now, I can say this. But it's sad to look back and see how they've wrecked everything

Welcome to TV Forum, Mr Grimsdale!

It's such a shame that Lenton Lane has to close - whenever I go to Showcase I can't help but look over the A52 to the studios, and still notice the Central colours on the roof. Why O Why, ITV!?

I wonder if the Lenton Lane building will be demolished or converted into warehousing? It would be nice if the Central colours on the roof remain there for many more years, after ITV have departed.

Jay - guessing you live somewhere in Chilwell. Do you know where Chetwynd Business Park is or will be? (sounds Welsh to me Laughing )

I'm not Jay, but I think it's being built on part of the old Barracks site presumably near the existing Chewynd Rd.

I actually live in Long Eaton! I'm not actually sure whereabouts this Central News place will go - but I know the area. I know that it won't be on the 'old' barracks site though, as it's still being used.

Oh, and RIP Cloughie.

They do still have a Barracks, but my neighbour tells me the site used to be much bigger. They have sold off the outer edges. There's loads of new houses being built and I thought I saw a sign saying Chetwynd Business Park.

Ah! I know where you mean now! Yes there have been loads of new houses built there and it all looks really nice now. This will be a good place for Central News, but it would be even better if the programme came from there.

Yeah, it would. I'm not positive, mind you, it's what people have said to me and it does make sense but we'll soon see. It is a nice area now, there's a good pub in front of the estate on the main road to Long Eaton. We go there to eat sometimes and that's when I saw the sign I mentioned.

The probable reason why they are keeping the 'grotty' YTV studios is because this is where most ITV production comes from these days in terms of decent programmes. Sorry, but Central really did master it's own downfall.
