ITV Central has announced that it is to build a state-of-the-art newsgathering centre for Central News East in Chilwell.

It is intended that the 4,000 square feet building at Chetwynd Business Park will be home to around 45 Central News staff, including the editor, news editor, sub-editors, reporters, video journalists, camera crews, video editors, technical operators, production and IT support staff.

William Davis Properties is currently developing a total of 119,000 square feet of office and business space on the business park, set within a landscaped park on an eight-acre site.

Phase 1 of the development will feature the ITV Central Newsgathering Centre with production of Central News from Chilwell starting in February 2005.

The Newsgathering Centre will feature the latest in digital newsgathering technology as part of a £5million investment plan. Avid Technology, the world leader in digital non-linear media creation, management and distribution solutions is developing newsroom systems which provide a single solution for storage, editing and broadcast of news and regional programming.

ITV Central Managing Director Ian Squires said: “We’re delighted with Chetwynd Business Park in Chilwell as the new home for Central News in the East Midlands. It’s a terrific location for our team, with easy access to Nottingham city centre and the whole of the East Midlands.”

Chilwell is a suburb to the southwest of Nottingham between Long Eaton and Beeston.

Thanks for this, ab. So at least we have an idea now when Central News East will move out of the Carlton Studios - later than first thought by the sounds of things.

Of course if the free paper hadn't just regurgitated the ITV press release they might have pointed out the lunacy of moving the presentation to Birmingham

Oh, for pity's sake! Rolling Eyes

Think about it people! As long as the reports shown in a news programme are made in/about the correct area, the two-people-sitting-behind-a-desk-linking-the-reports could be on the moon for all the difference it makes! Twisted Evil

Plus, most of what goes into creating the finished programme will still be in Nottingham (the new building) by the sounds of it. So, the aforementioned presenters-behind-a-desk is probably virtually the only thing that'll be in Brum, so the programme won't really be all that much based-outside-of-the-east-midlands. Mad

So, it's not the end of the world! Razz

Calm down! I'm not one of these people who thinks Charles Allen is the devil incarnate, and I don't automatically write off anything done by ITV plc.

I was just pointing out that the newspaper report quoted above gives, at best, a partial account of the situation. The new newsgathering centre isn't the unabashed triumph for broadcasting in the East Midlands that ITV plc might like people to think.

Also, I don't entirely buy the argument that the presenters might as well be on the moon. Splitting the operation doesn't really make for a cohesive team does it? And there's not much scope for studio guests if the studio is miles away from the coverage area of the programme. A down-the-line fixed camera in the newsroom isn't the same. What about opportunities for reporters to try their hand at presenting? More difficult for them to step in at short notice if they are not based in the same building.

Having the presenters and gallery in a seperate building does seem totally pointless.
How exactly does this save money?

Having presentation and newsgathering miles away will severely hinder the whole smooth running of the operation.

It won't change the presentation of the programme much, but as has been said...who's going to bother driving to Birmingham to talk about a story in Lincolnshire?

As for presenters...well I think it's likely we'll see a lot more of West's reporters present the shorter East bulletins.

Also...as can be the danger sometimes...will they actually go past the overlap and fill East with stories that are also on West? It can happen just to fill for time...and for the very fact it's easy.

Will we finally see Coventry on Central East!? MDR will be pleased...
