Well it looks like CBS isnt wasting anytime launching their CBSN LOCAL channels at their O&O stations nationwide. It looks like bottom-feeder affiliate WBBM will be one of the next after Boston and San Francisco channels to launch in 2020 alongside KYW and the Dallas afilliate. Boston is a really crowded news market with NECN and WHDH doing loads of newshours a day now WBZ joins the crowd, that doesnt include WCVB and NBC Boston. Broadcast and Cable has the latest:

CBS Television Stations and CBS Interactive are accelerating their rollout of CBSN Local, the company’s direct-to-consumer streaming news service, in all 13 owned markets.

CBSN New York debuted in December and CBSN Los Angeles in June.

CBSN Boston is next, and CBSN San Francisco Bay Area is scheduled for a fourth quarter release.

CBS Television Stations’ remaining nine markets will premiere their CBSN Local products in early 2020.

CBSN Local services have 24/7 anchored programming, coverage of live local news and a library of local news content on demand. They are ad-supported.

“The early success of CBSN New York and CBSN Los Angeles has exceeded our expectations,” said Peter Dunn, president, CBS Television Stations. “It is clear there is significant demand for high-quality local news coverage on streaming services, and we are moving forward with excitement as we prepare to launch CBSN Local services in all 13 of our local news markets. Our accelerated rollout schedule ensures launches in all of these markets ahead of the 2020 political primaries and elections.”

CBS announced earnings Aug. 8.

Besides its stations in New York, Los Angeles, Boston and the Bay Area, CBS’ owned stations include WBBM Chicago, KTVT Dallas-Fort Worth, KYW-WPSG Philadelphia, WCCO Minneapolis-St. Paul, KCNC Denver, WFOR Miami, KOVR-KMAX Sacramento, KDKA-WPCW Pittsburgh and WJZ Baltimore.

“The collaboration between CBS Television Stations and CBS Interactive, coupled with the enthusiastic response from the teams at our local stations, has created a winning combination, both for CBS and the millions of viewers we serve,” said Adam Wiener, executive VP and general manager of CBS Local Digital Media. “We are excited to address the rising demand for local, relevant and useful information on all platforms by leveraging our existing local news assets to dramatically expand the distribution of CBSN Local services.”

CBSN launched in November 2014. CBSN Local services are available through CBSN, CBSNews.com and through the CBS News app.

“Access to reliable local news is a priority for our audiences from coast to coast,” said Christy Tanner, executive VP and general manager of CBS News Digital.

Reportedly, CBSN Local was supposed to launch in Chicago before the LA-based one did but the low ratings at WBBM pushed that back and CBSN LA launched instead.

WBBM Chicago ratings have been garbage for quite awhile now. They were the preeminent newsroom between the coast for decades. Ratings were dropping and they wanted a change. So they reformatted. They havent recovered after they went full WSVN-esque tabloid in the mid 90s, but they got scared and then tried it pull it back. BUt it was too late and its been downhill ever since. Nothing has helped. Not sure what they can do to put it on the right track.

From what I've read, they even tried a new streetside studio and returning Chicago tv legends Bull Kurtis and Walter Jacobson, which did move them up to second place but CBS kept tinkering with the station and even bringing in WCBS talent but to no avail. WBBM isn't the only station that went WSVN-esque , WCBS-TV did as well, which caused layoffs and the ratings bottomed out there too. At least they were able to bounce back after retiring the format.

CBSN Boston has launched. Using the same format as CBSN New York and Los Angeles. The channel like the others is based at the O&O CBS station. This channel is based at WBZ 4 Boston.

THis is will be an interesting channel to watch because The New England market already has NECN own by NBC and then when the big channel swap happened and WHDH 7 lost it affiliation with NBC, they increased dramatically the hours of news they cover. Unlike NYC and LA which are huge news markets....can the same be said for Boston.

The graphics and the music are the same as the other channels, but features black and white images of Boston. The set is nice. I'm not certain about the existing WBZ set so I dont know if this is part of their existing set up or of this is exclusively for CBSN Boston. IT seems that way since their current set doesnt resemeble any of the elements of the WBZ set seen below. The CBSN Boston set looks quite good. Its fresh white bright and modern. The angled element is a screen with the logo scrolling. The big monitor came across as a bit low-res but its not bad with the black and white imagery being used and the studio lighting is great in my opinion. Iw as impressed. Seeing how thrown together the CBSN Los Angeles set is.

Here is their current set I believe. They did conduct an interview from this sets existing soft area.

The apparently the CBS O&O station in San Francisco KPIX -5 is the next to get the CBSN Sand Francisco.

Newscast Studio has an article about the new CBSN Boston studio including a picture showing the full set up. https://www.newscaststudio.com/2019/09/25/cbsn-boston/
- If every Local CBSN had a set like this they would be on the right track, LA could really use something like this. I wonder if BDI designed this since they are doing the new CBS O&O sets or if WBZ did it in house.

CBSN Bay Area is preparing to launch soon.
Here is the pic of their "Studio set up" in their newsroom. Apparently they have repurposed a desk that was used from their SuperBowl coverage when the game was played in San Francisco. As you can see they are using the frosted CBS Eye panels similar to the other stations. Seems like they are going with the white and bright look.

Here the old repurposed desk from their SuperBowl Coverage.

CBSN has launched in its fourth market, San Fransisco. The OTT network plans to be in 13 markets by the middle of 2020.

“Building on the success of our New York, Los Angeles and Boston services, we are excited to continue the rollout of our CBSN Local services with today’s launch in the San Francisco Bay Area,” said Peter Dunn, president, CBS Television Stations. “We look forward to meeting the rising demand for high-quality local news content on streaming platforms in all of our markets, and we are on course to have all 13 CBSN Local services launched by early next year, ahead of the 2020 political primaries and elections.”

CBSN San Francisco Bay Area’s daily lineup includes live streams of KPIX and sister station KBCW’s regularly scheduled newscasts plus an additional weekday one-hour newscasts at 7 a.m., 1 p.m. and 8 p.m produced exclusively for the platform,

“Everyone at CBS San Francisco Bay Area is excited to participate in today’s launch,” said Kevin Walsh, president and general manager of KPIX-KBCW, on Monday. “We look forward to making our award-winning local news content available to a wider audience, locally and globally, with consumers now being able to get the latest Bay Area news on their favorite platforms whenever they want to watch.”

Following yesterday’s launch of CBSN San Francisco Bay Area, CBSN Minnesota is scheduled to make its debut in December.

I'm excited to see what WCCO does for CBS Minnesota, my guess is they'll use the mini set they have in the newsroom, it features a "CBS Eye" desk, an overhead set of monitors and a window overlooking a public walking mall, they usually use it for "WCCO Mid Morning" and it's very versatile. If they put up a couple of those frosted CBS logo panels, accent lighting and a better angle for shots of the newsroom they'll be great.
