Today CBS launches CBSN Los Angeles from the KCBS and KCAL newsroom based at Studio City. This channel follows the successful format perfected at CBSN NY. The old newsroom set was modified in a costeffective way for this OTT streaming network. The station apparently has new mic flags featuring the CBSN LA logo and a large CBS eye logo.

According to industry publications the main CBSN is proving to be quite successful and the launch of CBSN NY has been successful as well. Plans are for CBSN Boston latet this year and then CBSN San Francisco. Apparently the CBS Chicago affiliate news product so weak they got passed over to launch a local channel for the 3rd largest market.

CBS Chicago is a bottom dweller and usually in the ratings basement. In the prior ratings cycle (February) the ratings were pretty bad they decided to switch coanchoring mid sweeps. It appears they have continued to do the in the ratings with the replacement coanchor whose been with them for years but was/is the investigative reporter.

Looks like the CBSN LA set is where the newsroom desk and the front signage could easily be removed if the network comes to town.

Watched a bit, the studio cameras are a bit washed out and give off a flat appearance.

*

Yeah I noticed that it was washed out as well. It seems like a lighting issue. Like they have a light pointed at the camera or something. Its not good. But its day one. Hopefully they will fix. It
It may "look dated" because it is. This was an existing set that had slight modifications made to it. CBS is hardly going to be spend loads of money of a set for a streaming service. They barely built anything for the CBSN National channel. So unlikely they were going to blow loads of cash on this. Its a cost-effective model and to breakeven and make the channels a success like the CBSN and CBSNY, they have to watch what they spend. So clearly they added the frosted panels and the painted the desk in the monochromatic colour. But i do agree they have a serious lighting issue that needs to addressed.

The set looks incredibly dated, something you'd see in the early 2000s.

I was going to say it was original to the building but this was what was there in 2013:

Image courtesy of SoCal Scanner (good photogallery).

It matches the design that’s featured in the national CBSN “studio”:

KCBS/KCAL have used the newsroom desk before when studios are being renovated. For this I imagine the acrylic branding will be swapped for something neutral or it will just be tight shots.

As for the signage above the Cronkite map you will see if you look at the SoCal Scanner the previous CBS News Los Angeles signs appears to be hung by hooks.

The desk you see here is the same desk that is currently being used for CBSN Los Angeles its only been sprayed light gray and they clearly added the knee wall and frosted panel in the background to hide the actual people in the newsroom. So of course it looks dated the desk is very old.
The knee wall and frosted panel used at CBSNY is a better design though in my opinion. A few large eye logos rather than loads of them scattered across.

That desk dates back to 2003. It was taken from KCAL's set at the old building on Sunset Blvd. KCBS/KCAL moved to a new building in Studio City in 2007, and that desk was one of the few set pieces that also made the move. It's been in the newsroom ever since. The newsroom set was given a minor update in 2011 when Scott Pelley anchored the Evening News from there. They added that "CBS News Los Angeles" to the front of the desk and the globe backdrop in the very back of the newsroom.

The desk for CBSN national is the last update desk from the Early Show set from ~2010. And the desk for CBSN New York is also a hand-me-down from the previous WCBS set.

Wow, I had no idea it dated back so long. The national desk in my mind doesn’t seem to match up with old studio.
