CBS is launching a 24-hour online news channel, expected to be called CBSN.

Apparently they're hoping to launch in time for the midterm elections on November 4. Jeff Glor, who presents the CBS Evening News on Sundays will be a main presenter, and it'll be presented from 'an informal newsroom setting', according to the above article.
WW Update and aconnell gave kudos

Seems odd if it to launch so soon they have very few details - you'd think they'd at the very least have a firm date.

It has a strong whiff of the Huff Post Live news channel, which was also announced spur of the moment and is currently...flourishing.

It'll be interesting to see how such platforms develop. TV consumption is clearly changing but people still enjoy sitting in front of a big screen and watching 'stuff'. With that in mind, are we going to see a boom in SMART TV apps? We already have some but the content tends to lack the live element that's being promised with this online channel.

It will also stream on CBSNews.com as well.

CBSN has just launched at http://cbsn.cbsnews.com/

I was fairly surprised to see that it's a proper news channel with two presenters, live reports and studio guests. I was expecting a much more no-frills affair. They obviously mean business!

I must admit, I was surprised that it is available worldwide (watching CBSN from the Philippines, by the way).

And I must say that they definitely mean business... they just need a proper studio, the newsroom look a bit messy.

Very nice remix of the theme as well. Graphics are very minimal but modern, as you say the newsroom could do with a tidy up or more space. I'm sure as the channel evolves and presenters get their own shows, each show will come from different studios and spaces.

I get the feeling that some of their segments are pre-taped, and they just loop it during "their" hour, and the anchors just go live when there are either breaking news or other developments.

EDIT: Recorded from the anchor's first hour, I mean.

I like what I've seen so far. It's basically what US news channels were like before they started shifting towards comment and debate. It might just be the set, but it reminds me a lot of CNN in the late 90s/early 00s.

That's not to say it isn't technically impressive, though. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the bar on the left that lets you view previous items became standard for all broadcast news channels in the future as broadcast and online become more closely integrated.

The only thing I've noticed that seems a bit odd is that they don't seem to have a 'live' bug. I tuned in during a speech by Obama that they were taking live, but it wasn't clear at first that this was the case.

The desk, form what I have seen, looks like the old Early Show newsdesk, albeit repainted/reskinned and lit differently..

That's CBS's approach to news and to credit, especially on the morning side it really works for them
