She will be leaving NCB in May and will anchor CBS Evening News.

Really? That's great for her but slightly puzzling. Surely that's like Fiona Phillips or Kate Garraway leaving GMTV to front Channel 4 News or something? Mind you, Katie's got the charisma to suceed.

Already been known for a couple of weeks...the contract just had to be signed.

It's different from someone on GMTV being poached...anchors in the US are celebrities almost...

She's getting paid $13m to $15m for 5 years around, can't see any UK presenter getting paid that much.

NBC Nightly News just mentioned it there...making an emphasis on the fact Katie will be a competitior.
Brian Williams wished her the best of luck "to a point"

Or Natasha Kaplinsky going from Breakfast to the Six O'Clock News?

(If you've watched CBS News it is currently very dry and quite basic.)

Its awful
Hopefully with Katie they might introduce a new more modern look to the programme, considdering that Katie is quite differnt in presenting style when compared to Bob Schieffer & Dan Rather

Ironically since Rather has left CBS news ratings have gone up - they are still 3rd though.

Katie has hosted NBC news specials before (and was on air on 11th Sept 2001, and I think carried on until 1pm - 4 hours over) so it's not like she can't handle any breaking news or big news stories.

And unlike over here, on Today, there is a strong news/ CA content during the show for Katie and Matt to handle, unlike GMTV where as soon as it's 10 past the hour it's into money making phone-in comps and interviewing soap and pop stars.

Still very dignified, nonetheless. I watched the clip of Katie's announcement on the MSNBC site, and Matt actually asked her to say where she was going after she'd said her bit - and wished her the best of luck.

All a stark contrast with Kirsty Young being sent on 'gardening leave' as soon as she decided to move back from ITV to Five - and Dermot Murnaghan mysteriously disappearing from the ITV news for a few days when he signed up with the BBC!

ABC's The View co-host Meredith Vieira has been named Katie Courics replacement on NBC's Today Show!

I think this is great news. Katie is my idea of a great news presenter. She's un-assuming, genuine, friendly and knows her stuff. She's everything that Natasha Kaplinsky would love to be but could never touch. I think we'll see some interesting changes in America's viewing figures. ABC is still second but could be dealt a blow by this. Bob Woodrow is still off ill leaving Elizabeth Vardis to basically solo anchor. She's good but not at Katie's level.

Has Katie done much field-reporting or anchoring on international, poltical, stories? Has she done much in areas of conflict.

I agree that Katie is more polished in the studio - but Elizabeth Vargas has impressed me on location (by being natural and not too polished), and somehow seems to have a more "journalistic" image. Katie is great on Today - don't get me wrong - she's a great broadcaster, with a natural style that works really well - and connects with the viewer.

However as a serious newscaster Elizabeth NOW seems more credible as an evening news anchor - though I wasn't so sure when she initially started doing World News Tonight anchor slots (when Peter Jennings was still with us). I also thought Charlie Gibson was great in the role - but he is too important for GMA to move.

Interesting times ahead for sure.
