WBBM 2 CBS Chicago debuted their new set tonight. Of course it similar to the other O&O stations. But IMO one glaring problem. The set is completely burned out in spots. Its seems over lit. But I like the brightness in general and doesnt feel like the streetfront cave studio they used for ages. Which was battered and bruised. But this new set its deep and layered and doenst feel flat. its a fairly good version of the O&O set with subtle differences from the other sets. That doesnt make it feel cookie cutter. In large market fashion they didnt make a big song and dance about the new set. Just a quick mention into the toss to the meteorologist and they moved on. Over all a very good effort, but some lighting issues.

WCBS 2 New York Debuted their new set as well. Its Similar to WBBM's but the video tower on camera right it not there and the texture behind the video walls is slightly different. And they have a video panel instead of the a durantrans on the front of the desk.

I absolutely love WCBS's new set. Best in the market, I'd say.

In the mornings, they use a nice purple/yellow/orange/brown lighting scheme on the bits of set between the various screens, giving the whole set a nice sunrisey feel.

Here is the set in the morning and here it is as used on CBS owned WLNY (Long Island). Notice the CBS2 logo is covered with a "metal' panel. Now it makes sense why this was one of the only sets to get video tiles on the front of the desk.

That colour scheme doesn't seem to work as well with the daytime image on the big screen. It looked nice on the 4.30-7am newscast where they use an image of sunrise over Manhattan, though.

Incidentally, I think the brown bit might actually be the lighting panel switched off. That's how the LED lighting strips on the BBC's sets look when they're not lit up. Interesting tactic if so!

As you can see 32 seconds into the above video, there's a bit of an issue when they bring up the story graphic on the screen behind the presenters. The skyline image gets squashed just before the graphic animates on.

It's only for a split second, but it's still quite noticeable due to the Empire State Building in the centre of the shot changing shape.

It also shows the pitfalls of 'flip-flopping' between the static behind the presenters shot of the New York skyline - all virually cloudless and in the process of a brilliantly bright sunrise...

...and the actual reality live shots in/out of breaks and the comedy act weatherman's live shots before the maps of a cloudy, misty, grey daybreak/early morning over Manhattan and Holbolken. Rolling Eyes

I know why the over the shoulder shots have to be always 'warm and welcoming', but it does lead the viewer to think why they can't use a live shot all the time and be consistant.

And on a side issue. The three presenters of CBS This Morning are sitting wayyyy too close to each other for the establishing opening three head shot.

I think the banner on the desk can be removed because you can still see a small strip of light at the end of the desk where the social media logos are

Strange because thats a video screen not a duratrans. Im thinking its a graphic error rather than a removable element. But the clunky cover that fits over the CBS 2 logo is horrible. Its would have looked better had they piece that fits inside the logo rectangle and had a circle with the calls letters cut into it with a panel that allows the light to shine through. That thing looks really messy.

It's a video screen. I think it maybe a graphics issue.

I really think it would be okay for it to be left open. People know the two stations are associated. They could brand it as CBS 2 News on WLNY.

It's a shame that they don't use a live shot as the background.

Also if you notice in the WLNY shot the woman (anchor or reporter?) on the far left side is oddly in view. The CBS stations still seem to be 4:3 safe and someone clearly didn't notice she was still in shot. They could probably zoom in a little bit more.

I don't mind this, as it's a really nice, striking image and fairly obviously static. WNBC's live shot of a similar view is realistic but not as nicely-framed, never quite as pretty, and often obscured by darkness, fog or low cloud.

Neither WABC nor WNYW use live shots in the background. WPIX can never seem to make up their mind.
