WDSU, the Hearst owned NBC affiliate in New Orleans, launched a new set Monday. The set was designed by Devlin Design Group and came as a bit of a surprise. Lately set installations seem to involve moving into another studio or to the newsroom temporarily. However WDSU decided to build their new set in their adjacent studio. It looks quite nice based in this video. However it appears WDSU still has. Not transitioned to an HD newscast workflow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGYRCxqNZF0

What are those faux-brick sections with blotches of grey paint supposed to be? It looks awful.

I imagine they were somehow trying to fit the aesthetic of New Orleans into the set. Yet the bricks are shaped as a parallelogram to fit their graphics package.

Seen all over the city's French Quarter - like Jean LaFitte's Blacksmith shop (now a bar) built in 1722.

Many set designers will incorporate something distinctive about the city into the set. Some are successful. Im thinking KOMO Seattle. And some results arent that great. Im not a huge fan of bricks or stacked stone, because it seems kinda outdated. But I do understand the application used for WDSU's set.

A couple of updates on CBS affiliates getting new sets...

WCBS in New York moved into a temporary set last month, with the new set coming in September:

WFOR in Miami moved into a temporary set this week:

WCBS's old set made its debut in 2011, and WFOR's in 2010.

KPRC 2 Houston - NBC. I absolutely love this new set from KPRC. Its the sister set of KSAT 12. It really looks great. Love the unique corner screen.

That is rather nice.

Very showy, over the top for local news.

Too much wasted space in my view. CNN International did the same trick of having a background screen that could also work for stand-ups, and that studio was much smaller.

Well Houston TX isnt a small town. And the station just moved into a big new building.

And the presenters dont simply sit behind a desk anymore. They move about and they dont just use the set for a single 30 minute broadcast.

I love the desk. I think they could have simplified the red "risers". But he desk is really nice. Love the ring above the weather center as well as the white curved desk that encircles it.

Reminds me of POP TV in Slovenia:

Sneak peak inadvertently given during today's special report:

*

Briefly seen at the beginning of an NBC News Special report on the Trump/Macron presser. It's very contemporary and returns to Studio 3C and has an opening to show MSNBC's 3A. Before they moved to studio 3K when Rock Center launched there was a glass window looking into each studio.

Edit : I watched the broadcast open in slow motion until President Macron started speaking (which was when the set was shown) and it appears it did not make it on air. The capture was from an Internet live stream where the recording didn't start with Lester Holt and cut straight to Macron mid sentence. While the TV broadcast stayed with the pool feed completely.

2.3 million homes puts it on a par with the Midlands here in the UK.

It ain't small, but you could still fit Houston in New York 3 times over in terms of market size, with room to spare.

No, the average is between 6 and 7 hours per weekday dependent on whether they're running a 4pm bulletin or not. But that's not the point.

CNN used this studio and set design as much as an local news operation does theres and there was no shortage of things that could be done with it.

Desk looks good, backdrop screen looks good, plenty of potential there, but will they use it as well as they could?

Weather Centre though is a complete waste of space. Most of the best weather work is still done in front of a green screen, not in a mini newsroom type set.

Now that's just a gimmick, for the sake of it. There's no reason for a video wall like that to go round a corner that way. It's too gimmicky.

Best part of the set in my view, is the soft section. That looks excellent, and probably will be well used in their early breakfast output, or should be.
