Would the dead space behind the anchor desk be for the same reason that CNN did it with their CNN International studio revamp in 2009,, so that they could use some of that for stand up positions?

Likely but Im talk about the plain dead looking un-designed, unlit, dead zone, part of wall above and below the LCD array. Not the floor distance from the desk to the wall. Nice try.

It wouldnt look half as bad if they added some texture lighting or maybe some back lighting around the perimeter of the LCD array. It currently looks like some badly light curved drywall. And blue-tinged fluorescent cadaver lighting doesnt help.

WFLD FOX 32 Chicago - Could the O&O station finally be ditching the hideaous mandated set? Well its about time. Hopefully WNYW 5 New York is gonna get one as well. It actually looks embarassing on air.

Quote:

* * WFLD-TV/FOX 32 will be hosting its newscasts from a temporary set for the next month or so (surprisingly doing so during the important February sweeps period). This is because a new, state-of-the-art set is being constructed for the station, which should be completed later in March.

WFLD is on a temp set in their newsroom.

Some fairly big changes to the main anchor desk area on Good Morning America. They've finally stopped using the live video feed of Times Square as the main backdrop (which has always seemed a bit odd to me in a streetside studio) - although they haven't removed it from the set altogether.

Just love the set from WFTV - Orlando. So amazing for an affiliate in a medium sized market. I love the 2 story video wall. Particularly how they use it. They did a special for the Pulse Nightclub massacre and they used it display one large image and then paid tribute to those murdered on the smaller screens. Then how they used the set for their Orlando City coverage. Transforming the entire backwall into a stadium view and swapping out the colours. Just a great look. Really love the entire creative direction from WFTV. The set, the music, the lovely flat graphics. It all goes together without being too over the top. And it fits with Florida. Not too nutty and OTT like Miami but just bit of razzle dazzle that goes with a FL tv market.

Yep, very nicely done all around and definitely unexpected from an affiliate.

I love the WFTV set but I'd remove the hard branding such as the etched glass in the "balcony" and on the weather center. I'd ditch the glass completely in favor of a two story great room look (which is what I think they were going for) and leave the monitors for the weather center which could be used for geeky segments. I'm thinking the pod would look great on election night as a command center showing results on the different screens.

It is a shame that their primary backdrop is recorded it probably would look great live.

This one isnt news per-say, but it falls into the Sports News column. The new studio for SNY (SportsNet New York) and its partnership with the New York Mets (Baseball team) NY Jets (Am football) debuted from the 50th Floor of 4 World Trade Center. Apparently its got a great view from its location up in the tower.
This the Daily News (newspaper), multipurpose branded news desk. I really like the look of this. I didnt think I would like the woody type duratrans treatment, but it actually can change colours depending on the type of show being broadcast. Quite versatile. The desk shape is really nice and for a sports broadcast its very cool with the frost "wings" at the sides and bottom. The gray background and then the white backlit frames and then the layer of lcd screen arrays look great.

For the Jets coverage

For the main set they reverted to the tried and true "Traditional historic stadium elements"....brick, metal beams and pillars. Not that interesting. The lighting is superb. I do like the virtual window and the yellow backlit inserted elements. The white backlit elements, especially in the brick portions, modernises a tired cliche style.

I do like the anchor desk and the curved feeling of this set.
This used for stand-up pieces, breaking news, interviews etc. Buts a nice view from their new offices.

For a sports studio, it seems pretty decent. Seems like a bit of a missed opportunity to not use the view for the main set.

All of those three sets are great. I think if the SNY set would be perfect for local news. The only thing I'd change would be replacing the brick work with wood to make it more traditional.

KMTV 3 CBS - Omaha Nebraska - There are no words to describe this ....whatever it is. Its a shockingly bad virtual set...its the last place station in the market and the group owner Scripps isnt spending money on this operation. They launched a new logo, graphics and this.....whatever it is.

You sure it's not the 'get you started' backdrop preloaded into their Tricaster ? Very Happy
