What is the American obsession with wood paneling every news set? I can't remember the last news set in the UK that used wood paneling for anything other than a floor, not that it's bad it's just two very different ways of doing things.

Good Morning Britain?

I did consider that, but then they did basically steal one of the US Breakfast programmes's set design.

It wasn't theft; the set was designed by an American company.

But more and more the wood panels have disappeared on the new sets that are launching in the past few years. Now you mostly see it on floors and such or in small bits and pieces. Not the big wooden sets you saw from 5 years ago or earlier. It was thought that using wooden gave the set warmth and approachability without seeming cold and clinical and standoff-ish. But have to remember that the US hundreds and hundred of tv news sets rather just a handfull, so the variety of what you see depends on the market, creativity, money and taste of news director/owner. So you see pretty much any type of set in the US from bright, modern sterile white sets to dark wooden monstrosities of yesteryear. I will be interesting to see what WLS 7 Chicago approved. I will suspect there will be a hint of wood somewhere.
So I would say the "obsession" has passed.

WLS 7 Chicago (ABC) preps to construct a new set in the streetfront studio. Today they appeared on their 2nd set upstairs.

Those bollards that probably were hastily installed after the car crashed into their studio don't look that sturdy. I think the car crashed to the windows on the left side of that picture. It looks like that raised portion probably stopped the car from going further. I imagine the part of the studio where the bollards are were where the entrance probably was when this was a store/entrance.

Actually those are not bollards and were not designed to stop a vehicle. Those were permanent barriers to keep the pedestrians from touching the glass. After the car crashed into the studio, ABC got permission from the city to put bollards at bottom of the street were the alley crosses the pavement, that is how the car go onto the pavement. The existing granite planters and wrought iron fences would have stoped the car but the guy drove around it. They had to get special permission for this. ABC and CBS sought special permissions for bollards. You can see the silver bollards at the bottom of this image.
---
The ABC 7 Building was a former theatre the main arch where the studio sits is where the entrance was and the marquee once stood. Actually on warm summer evenings day mild days they attract a decent crowd. It sits on a major tourist street and is directly across from the Chicago Theatre. (See reflection in next pic)
---
There set faces the street rather than have idiots bobbing up and down behind the anchor telling a story about a tragedy. CBS 2 - WBBM Chicago has a similar set up.
WBBM 2 Chicago. They are across from a Daley Plaza and the Picasso. But they rarely attract a crowd. And their set faces the street as well.

Thanks for the information. Didn't realize that was how the car got in and I didn't know those bollards close to the glass had chains attached.

If anyone's curious here's a montage of WFTV's set showing clips and behind the scenes aspects of the production.

Apparently WLS 7 Chicago didnt throw their old set in the skip. They dragged it up stairs from the StreetFront Studio to the old studio and re-assembled parts to resemble the old set whilst they rebuild. Looks good than the other temp set their were using.
Old set dismantled.

According to NewsCast Studio (links not handy) NBC's Today show originated from the second floor over the weekend and more work is expected to be done. They used the area opposite the kitchen which has five or six fake vertical windows displaying outside video or graphical elements at a 90° as home base (the area where Hoda and Kathy Lee originate from when they do a west coast update.). Weather was done from the hanging 103" Panasonic plasma that is located at the corner of the building from two windows.

A producer (again link unhandy) said an announcement will be made Monday about the reveal. I can't but help but wonder how'll they'll pull this off as the second floor is a bit small.

Judging by this sneaky peek...its going to be bigger change than expected. The set hasnt been around that long...or so it seems...never really liked it personally.

WINK - TV Fort Meyers Debuted new set this afternoon.

Looks like a stand up anchor desk. A bit of wood on the floor and beneath the Video Wall. Its a tall set. Its not a completely new set just a really clever refresh. The balcony was removed the anchor desk platform seems new and the backwall seems to have been reworked. The 3 "monitor" things remain just new duratrans added. Goes with their existing nice simple flat graphics. On screen graphics are all flat the lower thirds are a almost similar to CNN's, just not as fussy. Not sure about duratrans above Weather Centre. The colour looks off. I do like the trend of the desk lighting. Totally eliminates the dark circles around the eyes and under the chin. Makes that HD airbrush make up look half decent.

You can watch it in action on their LiveStream account. They replay their broadcasts.
