Sneak Peak - WFTV - 9 Orlando. Watch this timelapse of the set tear-down the temp set construction and the build out of a gargantuan set that features a massive 2 story newswall. It huge. Looks to be made of 23 huge LCD screens. Stunning for the market. Will be interesting to see it when its finished. FYI - The "room" built to the left side of the set seems to be the enclosed weather office.

I must say this set is quite impressive. 3600 SqFt studio. It looks good on air and very expansive. I really like the 2 story LDC display "window". Im not too keen on the anchor desk or the weather desk. They seem overly complicated. But the overall look it bright and modern versatile.

WLS 7 Chicago (ABC) preps to construct a new set in the streetfront studio. Today they appeared on their 2nd set upstairs.

Cant wait for this mess to disappear.

A few months back they spent a few weeks on the 2nd set to redo the lighting scheme and swap out the skyline backdrops when they update the graphics package. It seems weird that this was in the pipeline and they didnt debut everything at the same time. The new set is expect to be a Jack Morton PDG design.

Those bollards that probably were hastily installed after the car crashed into their studio don't look that sturdy. I think the car crashed to the windows on the left side of that picture. It looks like that raised portion probably stopped the car from going further. I imagine the part of the studio where the bollards are were where the entrance probably was when this was a store/entrance. I'm surprised they didn't evacuate the studio.

Local streetside studios never really seem to get the crowds that the stations envision. I imagine there were crowds when it first open but then they wain. They work on shows like Today and GMA because they are national programs, they have space for pedestrians to watch, have a chance to be seen on TV and finally they have actual segments to draw viewers to the plaza.

I'm never sure if they want crowds, or just want a 'slice of life' backdrop that reflects the reality of that day in daylight, weather, business of the street terms. Do news programmes really want people standing in the back of shot looking a bit stupid?

It's a bit of both really. A busy street background during the local news makes it feel like the show is live from the heart of downtown. But, they're also happy with crowds of losers waving banners as a huge portion of the local news shows is chat and filler. (Think Good Morning Britain on a local level)

A particularly clever touch is the fact that, even though the 'balcony' in the top left of that photo is purely for show, they're making it look like a working part of the set by using the view from it on a duratrans elsewhere...

Actually those are not bollards and were not designed to stop a vehicle. Those were permanent barriers to keep the pedestrians from touching the glass. After the car crashed into the studio, ABC got permission from the city to put bollards at bottom of the street were the alley crosses the pavement, that is how the car go onto the pavement. The existing granite planters and wrought iron fences would have stoped the car but the guy drove around it. They had to get special permission for this. ABC and CBS sought special permissions for bollards. You can see the silver bollards at the bottom of this image.

The ABC 7 Building was a former theatre the main arch where the studio sits is where the entrance was and the marquee once stood. Actually on warm summer evenings day mild days they attract a decent crowd. It sits on a major tourist street and is directly across from the Chicago Theatre. (See reflection in next pic)

There set faces the street rather than have idiots bobbing up and down behind the anchor telling a story about a tragedy. CBS 2 - WBBM Chicago has a similar set up.
WBBM 2 Chicago. They are across from a Daley Plaza and the Picasso. But they rarely attract a crowd. And their set faces the street as well.

I think the texture lighting on this set is fantastic. Just look at the little hits of light on the balcony branding. Great attention to detail. Hardly any dead spots. ITs a good set...except for the presenter desks.

What is the American obsession with wood paneling every news set? I can't remember the last news set in the UK that used wood paneling for anything other than a floor, not that it's bad it's just two very different ways of doing things.
