Yeah he has those of his family there. You notice when Scott Pelley isnt presenting they are removed. Not really a fan of that. But I guess its a little silent nod to his family.

That's not true. Those are pictures of 15 CBS News journalists who have been killed while reporting. More from here:

Quote:
Pelley, who says he is the proud representative of the Heartland in the CBS newsroom, called his current job “too wild a dream for me to even imagine.” He also revealed that he keeps the photographs of the 15 CBS News correspondents who have been killed in the line of duty on his desk, out of view of the camera.

“I keep them on the set because I don’t ever want to forget them, and I don’t want to forget what people are doing all around the world for the ‘CBS Evening News’ every single day,” Pelley said.

Is it wrong that I like the look of that set? Has a nice classy look to it, although I think I prefer it with the array of monitors rather than two big distracting screens. Then again I haven't had to see it every day for many years so maybe it's because this is the first time I've seen it.

Thanks for clarifying.

This set is tired, but still a nice and simple set. Desk, screens left and right, newsroom. Nothing overly fancy, no robotics, no 1 billion touch display screens that flip into forty different configurations. Just a nice, basic news set of national quality.

I would like to see them go with a CBS This Morning style look and set, with the different zones (green room, sofa etc) being removed in favour of the real newsroom and its staff. Might be a good thing to be the first evening newscast to move away from the traditional desk with the anchor behind it.

There were rumblings that the Evening News would move into Studio 57, the CBS This Morning studio, around the time it was built and when the new morning show launched. The original design of Studio 57 was to have it connected to the CBS Digital newsroom and have it open, not unlike MSNBC's Studio 3A. The very old (and real!) brick wall that separates the studio from the newsroom was too expensive to remove, however, so they outfitted it with the Cronkite map and a plasma array that mirrors all the feeds in the control room. I'm not sure why the Evening News didn't move, though I wouldn't be surprised if the separation from a real newsroom was a factor into that decision.

Edit: It's this wall. There's a newsroom behind it. It was just too expensive to remove the wall. A newsroom view would have made an already excellent set even more impressive.

Probably the reason. Studio 57 seems like the place for weekend/holiday news though, easy to feed to a screen and light the area, the EN studio would look odd if the newsroom was empty.

Funny you should say that. The CBS Morning News (which is a different program!) comes from Studio 47, the same studio as the Evening News, but they shoot the anchor in front of the RP wall and avoid the newsroom the entire time, presumably because it's empty at that hour anyway.

Does Up To The Minute not come from Studio 57 though?

It does ever since it went HD two years ago. They must have a reason for it, but I don't get it. It might be different in the East where UTTM plays longer, but on the affiliates in the west, the UTTM anchor will sign off from Studio 57, and then sometimes after just a 10 second break— poof! They're in Studio 47 for the Morning News. Same anchor, similar graphics, and pretty much the same content, but different branding and studio.

I think CBS News is a superior product, but I think it should be showcased better. No Im not saying it needs a "bells and whistles-set" and Scott Pelley doesnt need to moving all over the place. To me it looks soooo drab and tired. But having said that CBS NEWS SUNDAY MORNING...one of my favorite shows has been on the same set for what seems like to me...30 years or something. Its hardly has changed.

CBS News is notorious for being ultra conservative as far as their presentation goes. Their graphics are stuck in the 90s. Even when they updated them they still looked outdated. As Charles added that pic they slowly make changes to that thousand-year-old-dinosaur of a set. I would love if CBS bit the bullet and did some white clean and ultra modern which would be different from the norm for Network news sets in the US. ABC took the flashy tabloid reins (Peter Jennings is spinning in his grave) and NBC as per normal keeps updated fresh and modern yet not too overly modern.

Perhaps CBS Evening News can adopt the lower thirds seen in CBS This Morning and switch to one font. Many of the "Evening News" graphics use varying fonts.

Up To The Minute and CBS This Morning is in Studio 57. For reference, here are the other studios at the CBS Broadcast Center:
New York O&O station WCBS-TV is in Studio 46.
HBO's "Last Week Tonight" with John Oliver.
"60 Minutes" is in Studio 33.
Syndicated tabloid show "Inside Edition" also tapes opposite the Sunday Morning set at Studio 44.
Studio 43 is the studio used by CBS Sports.
Studio 50 is the Ed Sullivan Theater, used by "The Late Show".
Studio 41 is the home to BET Network's "106 & Park" a music countdown show
