So your saying ITN can do widescreen but ITV doesn't want the news in widescreen, even though it's 2007?
Well ITN has gone 16:9 with ITV News as I said above, it just ITV are cropping it, as they do with the regions too (yet many of the regions feed the regional news to ITV in 16:9). Just watch the aformentioned 'Coming Up at 10:30' promos (usually on at the end of the ad break 15 mins before) and you can clearly notice the sharper 16:9 picture, that and the graphic doesn't sit on the bottom of the screen.

No, for some reason ITV has chosen to crop it to 4:3 for analogue, and then broadcast it ARCed on digital. It's the same way that Anglia News is 4:3 on analogue and ARCed on digital, yet they stated when they moved to their current studios that they have full 16:9 recording and playback facilities.
Here is an old capture I took on my old cap card (hence the poor quality and old graphics) of the 'Coming Up at 10:30' which you can clearly see is in proper widescreen from the ITV News studio, no ARCing, no blury picture, and no graphics sitting on the bottom of the screen like it does when ARCed:

Just because Anglia's studios are
capable
of broadcasting in 16:9 doesn't mean they are producing it in 16:9. The equipment will be capable of switching between the two formats- and that's exactally what they're doing, switching to 4:3 for the news output.

Yes, it's proof of their 16:9 capabilities, but it doesn't in any way mean the news programmes are mad ein 16:9. Changing between 4:3 and 16:9 can be done pretty much at the touch of a button. They'll be switching the studio output to 16:9 for this trailer, then they'll switch back to 4:3 for the actual programme.

I know Anglia only produce in 4:3 as all programmes from the news studio is 4:3/ARCed (even programmes in regional slots such as Anglia Special Edition). However, as the promo is 16:9, and there is no point in ITN changing the Aspect Ratio just for a promo, I still think that ITV are receiving the news in 16:9 and then cropping it to 4:3 prior to it being broadcast/sent down the clean feed to STV, UTV and Channel. Of course, however, there is the chance ITN are just producing it in 4:3 like you say.

The problem with News and widescreen is not studios, but the reports. Footage comes in from everywhere and is spliced together and the editing of this for full widescreen requires technology which is slowly being introduced into ITN.
The reason why the trailer is in 16:9 is it's a studio based talking head shot. Instead of making the break bounce all over the place and be odd, they simply switch the studio to widescreen for the trailer, and switch back to 4:3 for the main show.
Let's get this straight. Nobody doubts that ITN have widescreen capabilities or that some of their trail promos are outputted in 16:9 - we don't need grabs to prove that point. As has been said, this is because it is mostly a studio-based shot that's easy to switch. ITV News' main programmes are in 4:3 cropped to 14:9 on some platforms, however.

This is incorrect and a contradiction in terms. If it was "cropped" then it wouldn't also need ARCing. ITV News is sourced in 4:3 and outputted as such on analogue. It is cropped to 14:9 on digital.
