C4 considering switch to Sky News

But why would Sky News be better than ITV News? (August 2005)

Channel 4's remit is to make none of its own programmes, instead commission them from ITV companies and independent production companies. This presumably also includes the news programmes.

Surely though, considering the amount of concessions given to ITV, OFCOM would probably allow Channel 4 to produce its own news service.

But they would need the services of some larger newsgathering organisation - it wouldn't be cost-effective for C4 to set up a whole infrastructure of their own.

I like channel four news, it's on a par with BBC, and knocks the crap out of ITV's coverage with ITN. Sky, well what can I say, it's basically 'The Sun' on TV. Gutter news, hate it, never want to see it. I hate it when channels use the 'we want to appeal to wider audience' when they dumb down. You don't have to be so patronising in order to appeal to a large audience.

It always amazes me how people can seriously compare Sky News to The Sun.

Yes, Sky News can be brash and OTT, but simple broadsheet-v-tabloid analogies simply don't work for TV news services. Partly of course because of the regulatory situation which requires TV news to be impartial.

There is a far greater range of light and shade on Sky News than descriptions like "The Sun on TV" allow for.

Are there other options apart from Sky News and ITN?

For example, don't Reuters produce the Newshour (and presumably news bulletins) for GMTV?

It used to be Reuters but it is now done by ITN

I believe that Reuters is in terrible financial difficulty at the moment - laying off hundreds of journalists and staff.

Actually GMTV produce the Newshour and all of their bulletins themselves now. They only use ITN for logistical support for example providing them with cameras for OB's.

Fair dues...... but I'm glad you think that Sky news is brash and OTT! However I do remember one occasion when Rupert M wanted to buy Man U, and every news provider reported it with impartial reporting making it the third/ forth article in the programme, while sky news were praising the idea and dedciated a whole fifteen minute, headlining report during it's main news report at ten (at the time). Altho that was a long time ago. I just see 'Fox news' when I see sky, and that is certainly not impartial. Presidential vote anyone?

Doesn't Reuters still produce the Northern Ireland GMTV news?

Granted, Fox News is far from Impartial, but Sky has to adhere to very strict guidelines on impartiality as do all news broadcasters in the UK.
