I left England in '89 as a primary school kid, and I'm glad I did because - as a keen admirer and viewer of ITN (used to sneak downstairs before dawn on school days to catch the 5am news and its glimpses of CNN and Super Channel!) - it would have been sad to see its slow, steady, predictable decline. I prefer to remember it as the brilliant, trusted and dominant player that it was.

Well ITN still exists and judging by last night's News at Ten, is as strong as ever. Check out On Assignment too every month.

Just an aside, but I caught up on the Sherlock episode "The Reichenbach Fall" last night. At one point in the episode (which dates from 2012) there is a set of fictional news reports from Sky News, BBC News - both using more or less accurate graphics for the period - and a third featuring the modern ITN logo, which afaik never made appearances as anything other than an end-cap. Very odd looking.

I don't think that ITN is dead as a consumer brand. Watching News at Ten, especially the new version, all that's missing to make it just like the old days is ITN rather then ITV news on the on screen graphics and maybe even on the programme intro....

Sigh. It patently is consigned to history if even they themselves don't use it!
And what the hell difference will shoving the ITN logo on the aston make? How is that *actually* going to improve the output or change perception? You even said IN THIS VERY THREAD that "ITV could become as great a news brand as ITN it a[i]n't there yet" based on your opinion of the quality of the REPORTS.

So, yet again, you contradict yourself. When are the school holidays over?
Rijowhi, Nicky and Justin gave kudos

I remember the ITN News Channel. It was such a strong brand it survived all of .... 2 years.

Indeed not, though it launched in 2000, when OnDigital ran the DTT platform (nuff said) and ITV had not yet joined the Sky platform, so everything was rather half-arsed.

From what I recall, the ITN News Channel was a part-time service on OnDigital with the 24 hour service not launching on DTT until the channel was rebranded?

They also had issues not being able to use ITV News copy until after it premiered on ITV itself.

But if we agree the destruction of the ITN brand was an error, then it could be reinstated to rectify that. I think ITN still carries a lot of weight. Anyway ITN = ITV News so why not bring back ITN? ITV can of course improve its brand for News as well.

But the passage of time means many people don't know the ITN brand anymore. It would make absolutely no difference.

I think you're right, yes.

Sky had it well down the EPG in the 'Factual' section, Ch 525 I think, after a load
of channels weren't rolling news channels. (Sky News was 501, BBC News 24 was 507 ?)

It was 525 remember well. Improved a lot towards the end. At the time ITV were going downmarket big time and were more interested in gambling channels like ITV Play than the news
