As a result the corporation has inquired as to the availability of Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, where the BBC often hosts its coverage of major political events. If the studio is not available then they could be forced to host the live programme from the corporation’s New Broadcasting House headquarters, although this could require the BBC to use a scaled-down set.

Does anybody else not see a big deal in this? Studio B has a lot of potential and it's the quality of the guests and discussion that matters, not the scale of the set. I still recall this opinion piece from last time round.

And yet something felt off. The studio was 25% too big, which made everyone seem like they were screaming at each other inside an immense aircraft hangar. Poor Mishal Husain found herself cloistered away behind a colossal sneeze-guard on some distant mezzanine.

It's not the studio floor (or size of it) that's the issue... There is a LOT more involved in producing an election show than the studio.

They’d need far more resources, a bigger gallery or multiple to handle all the lines coming in and out. If one was held at NBH I could see them renting an OB unit to handle it.

OB trucks are not really wired or configured to do that sort of multiple source programme, not without a lot of extra stuff bolted on and wired in. Not impossible, but requires a lot of upfront planning and wiring (that obviously takes time, (and time is money). For instance the OB truck the BBC used for domestic Wimbledon pres this year was being prepared for the task two months in advance. And that gig is nowhere near as complex as a national election.

Presumably this is why Election night isn't coming back to TC1. They have all the gear to support the comms and OB lines at Elstree now?

The 'new TC1' is only equipped as an LE studio anyway, if they did want to use it for an election, the same
as for an OB truck would apply.

To an extent, although a lot of the kit will be put in just for the event and it’s still lacking some things you’d ideally want.

The ‘new TVC’ has very limited incoming (and outgoing) circuits. Just not feaseable to do an election programme there any more. Even using Elstree there is still the need to use NBH as a hub to manage some sources.

TV Centre used to have unrivalled connectivity. It's now very much... rivalled.

To be fair, the connectivity of TVC had when it closed may not also be what you'd need for election coverage when we have the next one.
Satellite downlinks and lines will be migrating to more IP based systems, and that isn't quite so difficult to provide.
Where are the largest concentrations of incoming feeds these days (other than the BT Tower) - the Broadcast Centre, Red Bee, Sky, BT Sport?

That's an idea - Jeremy Vine playing political football at the BT Sport studios.

Armando Iannucci's 'Time Trumpet' is almost here now I fear.

Good to know. Does Elstree actually downlink satellite OBs anyway or are they downlinked at NBH/Wood Norton and fibred to Elstree?

IMG probably come quite high up the list, though they're pretty fully booked these days. Globecast and Arqiva have quite a chunk (split over a few sites), but no big studio facilities to speak of.
