I tuned in for the start of Newsroom Live today but switched off immediately when I saw Carrie Gracie standing on College Green. Broadcasts from there are unwatchable IMO as the demonstrators and their flags are too distracting. I also worry that said broadcasts create a more serious problem in that the TV companies' presence attracts the type of demonstrator that may harass MPs on either side of the Brexit debate.
I'd far prefer broadcasts to take place in a studio away from College Green. Even the spot inside the Palace of Westminster where they often interview MPs (I think it might be called the lobby?) would be better.
Totally agree, and dare I say it, its hardcore remainers who are mostly to blame. I heard 'b*llocks to Boris' and 'f*ck the brexiteers' earlier whilst watching Carrie trying to conduct an interview. With language like that its only a matter of time before there's a wave of section 5 arrests going to happen. They're not doing their cause any favours what so ever.
We've debated and discussed this before on here. The broadcasters really need a shared studio space overlooking the Houses of Parliament, but within close proximity (ala College Green). I believe there was talk of using a nearby multi storey car park at some point?
Re. central lobby. I think the issue is you have to have media accreditation passes to be situated there and I believe its only senior political correspondents at the BBC who have access, so the likes of Huw, Simon etc don't. College Green is different, as the temporary enclosure there is staffed by G4S and they will let journalists/members of the media through providing they have sufficient press ID. I was let in the enclosure a few months ago with my NUJ press card and radio station ID when I was covering one of the votes of the previous deal.
Is there any news on this media chamber in the commons which was touted post-renovation works?
Watching BBC Breakfast this morning
For reference the article is/was https://news.sky.com/story/how-your-mp-votehow-all-mps-voted-on-an-amendment-which-is-said-to-effectively-force-boris-johnson-to-ask-for-an-extension-to-article-50-d-on-letwin-amendment-to-pms-brexit-agreement-11839470. Had this been BBC News I can imagine the press and politicians would have had a field day over the initial article title.
Watching BBC Breakfast this morning there was once again one solitary but very loud 'stop brexit' protestor making himself heard. From one of the interview angles it looks like the individual is using a megaphone tube. I can't help thinking that BBC needs pre-empt the individual turning up and find a way to counteract it. Maybe using more suitable/directional mics, if there was any way to reduce noise at their current location (e.g. glass screen), or find an alternative location where the protestor(s) can't be heard as clearly.
They've now changed that with the following message.
A previous version of this article ran the headline: 'Did your MP scupper Brexit Deal Vote? Find out here...'. It was changed by a senior editorial figure who felt that it fell short of Sky News' editorial standards.
