I think this thread is probably one for the 'insiders' but why is SKY News able to break Breaking news so quickly and ITV news and BBC News 24 at times so much slower.

Is it that there is a difference in methods and strategies or company policy.

I always used to think it was because the BBC are so cautious with the news as shown during 7/7 but ITV are even worse at it, so why?

Any comments welcome...

Please also answer the poll, I'm interested to see what type of people we have visiting this forum.

I think I read somewhere that the BBC want to verify breaking news first, and then re-verify it. Maybe that's why they are slower. And I think ITV NC are slower because they watch Sky News to get their news updates.

Where's ITV News in your poll - it's not gone yet you know!

Expanding on this issue, I feel "Breaking News" is used far too often on the news channels for stories of relative little importance, often say just for people leaving a building to go somewhere else!

Obviously it can often take time to see how important a story is, so I have no problem with them covering things such as the Liverpool train derailment earlier this week, which didn't turn out to be a major story - but often out of the numerous "Breaking News" stories throughout the day, only a handful are worthy of inclusion.

I always go to ITV News for Breaking news. It's what they do best.

So where is it in the poll option?

ITV love their dramatic breaking news, they built a wall just to display the text "breaking news" (That is the only time they utilise the whole of the surface) in the biggest possible letters.

Probably because Sky News don't check out the story to see if it is valid - they get the source and use it, which is why they say "Reuters has reported" "The Associated Press..."

BBC probably check out the story...ITV News well they probably look at Sky and BBC and say 'if they're broadcasting it we have to as well'

One thing I remember last year on ITV News is how during the coverage of the Beslan siege, Julian Manyon revealed there were dozens of bodies in the school gym while live on ITV News.

The press associations then picked up on this, and then minutes after reporting it themselves, ITV News reported they were getting info from Reuters (or somewhere) that these bodies had been found.

You know, I remember that so clearly, and I thought that was strange.
