Well Lookaround was a bit of a mess tonight. They had a special feature for Bank Holiday called ' The Great Escape '. Seems the features have at last been pushed upon Border to adopt. Well they had 3 LIVE's, and it was a reporter handing to a reporter, but it was not well done.
Fiona handed over to Nick Martin (he seems to get the job of doing most of the live OB's Border do) on the plasma, but he wasn't brought up on the screen, so it looked a bit silly. The Lookaround aston thing didn't appear for a few minutes, and the aston said Nick Martin, LIVE, * place name * (can't remember), but it looked very ' flung - together '. Then the reporters used split-screen to hand over to each other, but we then lost the LIVE with Nick Martin and the screen went black. Then back in the studio Fiona kept looking at the wrong camera.
The programme was an utter shambles tonight, not like Border. They need to work on their LIVE's.

I found myself watching ITV Wales News tonight. Lead story, "The Great Escape" and according to the presenter, this was some ITV-wide strand (so probably all the other ITV plc regions did something similar). The programme finally got around to some news from Wales about five minutes in before more tacky Great Escape stings heralded shots of a pretty empty M4 motorway. As someone somewhere commented, ITV regional news seems to be "features and news" rather than the other way around?

Well on Calendar the 'Great Escape' strand was well down the running order, so if any region lead on this it's down to an editorial decision locally
Well Border, editorially, are very good, they always cover proper news first, THEN the lighter stories. What they did was the usual opener, then Fiona and Tim handed over to Nick Martin live in the Lake District for a preview of what was to come on the Great Escape. Then back to the studio for the main stories, then back to the Great Escape and then more news. The programme finished with the Great Escape.
I just hope this isn't a sign of things to come on Border, they have generally been one of the best ITV Regions for news ( but not for their studio tastes, as the past few studios have proved !!! ).
Central News with Jo and Peter too had the great escape leading. I think we may have used a ITV West reporter for the road travel news live in bristol.
I just caught the end of Lookaround, and there have been a few changes to the studio, but I don't know if it was just for todays programme. The plasma that sits in between the presenters has gone, and there is now a tighter shot with both presenters, and it is centred on them, no longer slightly from one side. It is hard to describe, but this image ( Thanks to TV Room ) may explain.
As you can see it is not equal on each side, but now we no longer see the lights, and it is a really tight shot with both presenters now. It certainly looks better. They have a camera on the ceiling which looks down on the studio, but it is hardly ever used, it would look better if it was used at the start of the programme etc. Currently after the titles it is just into the shot of the presenters. But I will watch tomorrow to see if there were any other changes.
From the update there, I see the plasma has been moved to the right for the presenter on the right to sit in front of. Whereas before it was only the presenter on the left who had a plasma to sit in front of.
Border are still at their studios in Carlisle where they have always been. But they have two separate buildings - one with the newsroom and offices etc., and there is another building about a quarter of a mile away where all the technical side of things take place ie. the transmitters. I believe the Lookaround studio is there too. I don't think there are any plans to move. Border don't have a lot of money - they don't even own a satellite truck. They have to hire one when its needed. Otherwise they do a live from another ITV stations studios where there is no need for a sat - truck.

but with granada/carlton downsizing facilities at central, granada, meridian and talk of it at tyne tees - its surely a matter of time before the accountants spot that border could live in smaller premises.
I notice Border had a report on the LibDems conference, and that they have a ' Westminster Correspondent ' called Simon Page. They have never had a Westminster Correspondent before. Do all ITV regions have a correspondent in London, or does Simon Page cover other regions too ?
Lookaround used a new ' LIVE ' aston tonight, nothing similar to the regional corporate look. It was simply a blue box in the top - RIGHT corner of the screen with ' LIVE ' in it. Every time Border do a live, they have a different aston for it !!!
