This from the BBC On This Day website:
"Downing Street issued a statement at 0930 GMT on 22nd November 1990 after Mrs Thatcher had informed her Cabinet and the Queen of her intention."

So she didn't make an announcement herself then, and unless the Tv companies knew in advance there'd have been no news programmes on at that time.

Shame Infax isn't working!

EDIT: think it is working, it's just I can't get it to search for 22/11/1990

BBC's John Sergeant said: "Her decision to withdraw from the leadership contest was not taken until 7.30 this morning" so this is very different from Blair as he told everyone he will be leaving two years ago.

Mark Austin has just said on the ITV News at 10.30 there will be special news program tomorrow and got this from the Sky News thread:

No Lunchtime Live tomorrow on Sky apparently, Sky News Today runs from 9 till 5, with Kay Burley in Sedgfield, Julie Etchingham in Westminster and Adam Boulton in Downing Street. Live at Five will also come from Westminster. Martin Stanford and Anna Jones will be in studio.

Sound like they are putting out all the stop.

Any news on what the beeb are doing?
I would think they would be an BBC News special on BBC1 presented by Huw Edwards.

So, here we go . . . Sian Williams is anchoring from Westminster for Breakfast, and John Stapleton is outside Downing Street for GMTV's News Hour.
