As this recent photograph shows, I think she looks a lot younger now, than she did then !

Good Heavens, I agree. She does look a lot younger now than she used to. You seem to have lots of images and stills of TV News - perhaps you could post a "Moira Montage" as a reply, so that I can use it as the coversheet for my petition to News Bosses to have the great lady restored to her rightful place on TV!!!!!

We could call it "Twenty Images of Moira Through the Ages".

The weirdest one I can recall was Moira almost being thrown from a camel lifting from its knees on the "Holiday" programme.............

They have images and video from british tv news. On the TV-Ark presenters sections there are some pictures of Moira since her BBC career began in the early 80's.

I notice that no-one's yet registered www.bigmoira.com! Surely it's time that someone came up with a tribute site.

I watched the Six O'Clock News on a Friday evening, presented by Peter and Moira. Moira presented also on the Saturday. On both days, she had really really short cropped afro style hair.

She then turned up on Sunday on BBC1 presenting the daily bulletins - and she had longer hair. (Not quite like the photo above, but longer than it was the night before). How could that be????!!!!???

Not to start sounding like a feminist, but why is it that none of the world's large, English-language broadcasters have women newsreaders in the top newsreading jobs?

Fiona Bruce comes close, but she reads news on days that any sane person would rather have off (i.e., the weekend)....so she's more of a "replacement" than not.

Barbara Walters co-anchored the ABC Evening News with Harry Reasoner in 1975...but that ended quickly because there was a sort of anti-chemistry between the two.

And now that Tom Brokaw has decided to retire, and we hear that another cookie-cutter white guy (Brian Williams) will replace him, is it really not a rather obvious observation to note that women and ethnic minorities aren't getting the top news jobs at major broadcasters?

Cable networks like CNN and BBC World are more of an exception, and probably because of their format are able to avoid casting the typical archetypal "leading man" news anchor. Still, I wonder why public broadcasters like BBC, PBS and CBC do quite the same thing as the private networks, especially when they have so much non-white, not necessarily male talent.

Something I've always wondered... does anyone know what nationality Moira is? I guess she could have been born in Britain, though obviously her family comes from somewhere overseas.

The BBC TV Network service DID have women in senior presenting anchor roles years ago - Sue Lawley, Julia Somerville and Debbie Thrower to name but a few.

The others of recent years (Frances Coverdale, Jill Dando, Lynette Lithgow, Jennie Bond, BIG MOIRA...) and even today's Fiona, Sophie and Natasha don't apear to be considered as the lead presenters. tyhe exception at BBC1 is Anna Ford, who anchors her One Bulletin alone.

I believe that Moira's ancestors were from Sierra Leone.

True. Also, is it just me or are the newer ones getting posher? I ask after yet another afternoon of Gwenan on N24. I like to hear regional accents and she just bores me with her clipped vowels. I really do miss Maxine! Sorry, back on topic, I am impressed that the expected lectures have not surfaced, happily so. The usual group have been uncharacteristically quiet lately. We should enjoy it while it lasts! I suspect the lack of the ladies you mentioned is due to the same reason as Moira, which is a shame IMHO.

I've got a nice signed photo of Moira. She's been reading the news ever since I can remember, and I agree with the original poster's comments about her not being part of the tiring 'celebrity' culture.

Moira is a true professional, has a lovely smile and I highly regard her.

I hope that if / when she retires that she'll get a magnificent send off - especially since AFAIK she has been entirely loyal to BBC News all this time and has never hopped over to other broadcasters.
