Domestic news including what exactly? If you don't like blanket coverage, maybe rolling news channels aren't for you, and you should seek alternative ways of getting news - plenty exist.

I thought rolling news channels were just that, somewhere you can dip into for 15-30 minutes, and catch up on all the major stories, not just one.

Take a look at EuroNews, that's what they've been doing this afternoon, as have France 24. It's CNN, BBC, SKy and Al Jaz that have ditched everything.

Yea I agree - if any story warrants blanket coverage and an international broadcast, this is it.

Blanket coverage of what exactly ? She's been killed, and that's it.

If you think the assassination of a political figure has no implications then you are sadly mistaken.

I agree, this has huge implications, but that's no reason for hours worth of instant speculation from news presenters.

Of course there is. This is a massive story with implications for the entire world! This type of coverage is more commonly known as 'open ended', 'continuing coverage', and other news stories are shelved until it is deemed relevant to bring them back.

Euronews is not a LIVE rolling news channel, and France 24 do not have the resources to go open ended.

In a way I agree about the pointless speculation but there wouldn't be any other news today anyway - look on the England section of the BBC news website: "Three women collapse during Next sale". Whether or not there is too much speculation is a moot point. A major world politician has been assassinated, in a country from where one of the UK's biggest minorities comes from (so there will a lot of domestic interest anyway) and in which the political situation, were it to descend further into chaos, could easily have a great impact on YOUR security.

I really feel this is when BBC News really excels (when there's a major, continually developing story.

Just a shame that I notice Tim has come back on News 24. Has Peter Dobbie gone back to BBC World...is the simulcast over?

P.S. Just shows how the absence of a 24-hr news channel makes ITV look pathetic in cases like this. Not even a mention of the itv.com website at the end of the report, just a message to get the latest at 6.45pm!

How many would turn over when told to though, 1%?

For most people it's a case of 'thanks for letting me know this news, but it doesn't directly effect me so i'm still going to stay tuned to the programme up next and get on with my life'

Regional news programmes were cut short this evening.

My local news had 2 stories featured, followed by the weather.

It's because of this major story.

Edit: I was watching ITV Tyne Tees

I wish Reporting Scotland had been cut short. It was a joke. Desperate time-filling.

All the way through I was thinking we could have spent more time on a more important international story.

Yes, Peter is back on World doing rolling coverage from there with various guests.

Only ITV could get a celebrity link to a political assassination... Laughing

And hours of endless speculation is not what you got! As an open ended story it may emphasise the key points several times but this is drawing in reports, interviews (pooled and otherwise), shots etc all the time. Only a few hours afterwards, we are seeing rioting in many Pakistani cities and again this raises possiblities of a State of Emergency situation. Presenters are drawing upon reports and discussing these possibilities.

Overall, I've been very impressed with the level of coverage, relying important information and assessing the situtation.
