What a terrible story... I confess to not knowing a huge amount about Pakistani politics, but I always got the impression that Benazir Bhutto was a thoroughly decent woman with admirable intentions. It will be interesting to see the repercussions of this, especially with the finger of blame already being pointed at the Pakistani government by some.

A sad day for democracy.

Such a shame Benazir has been killed.
Sky News have Mark and Anna anchoring, and they are talking to a friend of the Bhutto family in their Westminster studio. They've been great with keeping up with all the latest. CNN had a video showing Benazir actually getting into her car, not sure if I've seen that on any other channel. AlJazeera Eng. had a correspondent in Rawalpindi and have been speaking to him a lot, and Darren Jordan has been anchoring for the last hour or so.

Any images of the Al Jazeera coverage?

What are the Pakistani channels on Sky doing (such as GEO, PTV Prime)? Can't check them at the moment - I don't get all of them as some you have to subscribe to separately anyway!

AlJazeera have just stopped the non-stop coverage, the only mention of Benazir Bhutto's death is on their flipper.

I don't like Tim doing rolling breaking news coverage. He seems to think he has more authority over his co presenter, and probably thinks that because he is ALWAYS on and thinks he may have more experience than anyone else.

It's been a long time since World and 24 have simulcasted for over 2 hours during the UK daytime.

P.S. Just shows how the absence of a 24-hr news channel makes ITV look pathetic in cases like this. Not even a mention of the itv.com website at the end of the report, just a message to get the latest at 6.45pm!

Find it hard to argue with that. They may as well have said: "For more on this channel turn to BBC1". Rolling Eyes

I know why ITV felt the need to remove the news channel - it's a commercial broadcaster and wants to make as much money as possible, and it was clearly in third place.

However sometimes you have to think about the brand values of a channel. Sky doesn't run a news channel for the good of its own health - it's done for political reasons. It was originally there to give the channel a British face and give the satellite broadcaster a bit of credibility amongst those not interested in eight hour long repeats of The Simpsons.

At the moment with never-ending phone quiz programmes, trashy programming and its lead channel advising people to tune back in for an important developing story in six hours, ITV no doubt looks more and more to the opinion formers like Sky One.

Incidentally - and on topic (sorry for the rant) - both channels doing well this afternoon. BBC being more reticent but having more analysis, Sky going further in breaking the news.

Simulcasting for the BBC makes sense at this stage but obviously means there will be no UK news until they decide to leave this story, whereas Sky will presumably be doing some updates on more local stories.

Yeah agreed! He really does think he's the kock of the walk. Butting in every 5 mins. Annoying

It's odd how there's always major news at this time of year - the Bam earthquake, the tsunami, Saddam Hussein executed and now this. I don't think it's just that there isn't as much news as normal, these would be major stories at any time of year. It's almost becoming a sad tradition.

I see as usual all other news has been ditched, in favour of now nothing more than endless speculation. Are the BBC and Sky actually capable of covering more that one thing at a time ?

I don't think Tim Willcox has been annoying or unprofessional this afternoon. And he might well try to be more athoritative and experienced but there is no way he can succeed having Mike Embley as co-presenter, who has once agian proved today to be faultless at his job: his style is just unique, always concentrated, authoritative, impecable. Excellent broadcaster.
