BBC's remaining 4:3 regions converting to 16:9?

BBC CI are switching to 16:9 in May, so i assume that mainland Spotlight are doing so too. About time too, because the quality i think really suffers on broadcast material when it's shown in that way.

I was under the impression that BBC South West were not going to change to full widescreen until they move to their new studios.

No idea when that was meant to be happening.

There are still, I think, debates about the preferred site to replace Mannamead. AIUI, Plymouth will be switching to 16:9 as part of the general refurbishment project that includes a server installation.

Will NE and Cumbria be getting a new studio, as BBC Londons studio have just had a makeover.

Why would they be getting a new studio ? There are no plans to relocate BBC Newcastle to new premises. If you mean are they getting a new set , well that's entirely up to them, it'll have nothing to do with the fact the BBC London have had a refresh.

The current studio set that Look North uses is barely two years old, relatively young in terms of regional studio life (e.g. Spotlight, and indeed, the previous LN set). There aren't any plans to change the set design at present, all they've done is installed some nice new wide-screen projector screens.

The set isn't my main concern with LN though, it's the mish-mash of titles they use at the beginning. For two years they've used the Newsline (now new Nationals bed) bed going into the audio from Leeds' closing titles. Rather messy. The rest of programme uses typical stings and beds found in the LN package.

Plymouth has upgraded to 16:9 today.

That just leaves Bristol and Southampton in the dark ages.

Not forgetting the continually faced lifted set in Southampton. Which still has cream walls, random blue titles, a bendy desk (when they have a perfectly nice round one) I'm hoping when they do eventually go 16:9 they'll totally remove the existing set and make a new one.

I'm glad you said that, I thought I was imagining it during Breakfast this morning. (I'm not at my best at 06:30 Laughing )

Have they changed their Astons to match the national style as Newcastle did when they went 16:9?

Yes I noticed something, but the picture quality didn't seem that much better. During Breakfast, all reports were shown 4:3 in a 16:9 frame, and before the news the ident still looked faded.

Spotlight just had a report rewind on air. They may be 16:9, but they're still playing off Betacam (Westcountry Live have been fully digital for years!)

I was amused by the report from Taunton from Clinton (I'm employed by Bristol, so I have to sound as bored as Malcolm Frith) Rogers in tonight's programme.

It had, obviously, been sent down the line form the Luddites in Bristol, so it had to be shown in 14:9 in the middle of the 16:9 programme.

I assume all the stuff for Weymouth and the surrounding area, sent down the line from Southampton will also have to be ARC'd up until the others catch up.
