BBC’s Parliament channel staff to strike over pay grades
Staff on the BBC’s Parliament channel are to stage a 24-hour strike in a dispute over “unequal” pay grading.

Members of the National Union of Journalists will walk out on Wednesday after voting unanimously for action. Most of those taking part are broadcasting assistants.

A BBC spokesman said: “We expect to offer a normal service including broadcasting PMQs on BBC Parliament as well as BBC News Channel and BBC2 as usual.

I assume from the article this strike is occurring today, though this article is the first I knew of any strike. Presumably deliberately striking on a Wednesday due to PMQs.

I hope both of their viewers aren't too disrupted!

I was hoping for a repeat of a classic general election instead!

They could always use the back up DVD player if they run out of things to show.

its often the case that major disruption only occurs these days when all of the broadcasting unions take joint action. A strike just by technicians in Bectu or journalists in the NUJ can have limited impact. A strike by both at the same time has a bigger impact, though nowhere near as much as in the 70s and 80s when Union membership was far stronger (almost to the point of being compulsory).

Are the Parliament TV team part of BBC News, or a separate unit? I assume from the Guardian article that they are separate from Democracy Live, too?

They used to be employees of Granada when BBCP first launched.

I think the actual Paliament coverage is done by the house itself, as Host Broadcaster of sorts. BBC Parliament dedicated staff probably mainly handle pres and filler content.

I believe BowTie television have (or had) the contract to produce the core coverage, which is available to all broadcasters.

I believe the BBC Parliament team are also responsible for handling all on-screen graphics on BBC Parliament output - which is a little more than just a 'pres' role.

It was taken off again shortly after dvboy's post - I just saw them fading it off before I get a cap.
