Does anyone know why BBC One aren't making a generic ident without the dancers? They could have a 'dare i say it' globe in the background in a 3D look with the BBC One logo in the centre.

Isn't the globe seen as the symbol for BBC News and News24 these days rather than for BBC1

I would agree as I think it was inappropriate to have used that ident.

Well then, it shouldn't be a problem using it as an ident into the news, should it? I personally think that would be a much better idea as, as was proved in this situation, the idents can be inappropriate, and in other times, the dancers are just extremely annoying.

I seem to remember 'BBC News' , being shown on a blank background when the queen mum died.

Not to introduce the coverage; that was a static image from the Ballet symbol.

Tackeling this event needs to be done with some decorum however there is such a thing as taking things too far.

We're all aware at what has happened and we won't forget those who have lost their lives. We have to however keep moving on and work to get things back to a level of normality. Everything that can be done is being done to help those people in everyway possible.

You cannot expect everything to change because of this event. If that's the case then cancel New Year celebrations, cancel birthdays, cancel all programmes on TV. I do not believe that showing a festive piece of film and music in the festive period is disrespectful - not the best solution but it's still the festive period and there's no point in furnishing our screens with sombre music and videos at every possible oppertunity.

What's actually miffed me - and this applies to those who will no doubt complain to the Beeb is you have the time to complain about this when quite frankly I think you should be diverting your attention into donating every spare penny you have to help these people and not worry about what music they;re using to introduce the news of the event.

I've been waiting for someone to say it but they probably have already. How many people feel the use of an EXPLOSION in the titles is innapropriate? And how many people felt the use of the EXPLOSION titles was innapropriate during the Stockline plastics explosion?

I think we need to take a reality check people. I mean if the Beeb were to play the latest Spice Girls track over a report about this then yes you can complain. But ... get a grip people

Agreed.

I would be amazed if anyone on this forum expects that.

Agreed. Using the Bouncy Puds symbol was not the best solution. Ballet would have been better.

I don't think anyone on this forum would expect the Ballet symbol to be used at every possible opportunity.

However it would have been good if had been used to introduce the News Special and the DEC Appeal, as these were programmes of a very serious nature which were not part of the planned Christmas schedule. The use of a brightly coloured, highly kinetic ident, with a very upbeat Christmas-style music track was not appropriate as a means of introducing such programming.

What would the BBC do if the Queen died? Or if some major disaster killed 125,000 of the English? Would we still see these kids on bouncing balls?

If either of those happened it would be news news news all the time. BBC1 'Presentation' wouldn't get a look in

There are practicalities to consider here. One, that the normal idents would not have been loaded onto the server. If it was suddenly decided to use regular symbols for news and other programmes related to the tragedy, such a gesture could be considered meaningless when the puddings continued to bounce into other programmes.

How should they have done it - Simple. "This Is BBC1" over the ident, fade out, fade up the "BBC NEWS Special" caption and continue the announcement over this. Perhaps mute the ident.

The severs have more than enough capacity to cope with the additon of two Christmas Symbols without having to remove the normal dancer symbols. Trust me, they are still on server. As for the technical problems of replacing one symbol with another at short notice, it is a simple case of changing the Mat ID for that event in the schedule. It takes no more than about 6 seconds to do (if you are having a slow day).

The use of a sombre symbol to introduce sombre programming would only be a meaningless gesture if all symbols from that moment in time were replaced by the same sombre symbol.

The use of a sombre symbol, such as Ballet, to introduce something like A News Special is given more (not less) meaning by the return to normal symbols for originally scheduled programming.

If we were to follow your logic, then any future introduction to obituary news coverage would be made using the Salsa Symbol... because according to what you have said... the use of something like Ballet "could be considered meaningless" when we returned to more upbeat symbols.

Last year over Christmas the link to the news had a smaller, lighter and more serious music (very similar to Skateboarders ) yet this year you get those puddings dancing around with a jolly happy tune.

There's no need for it and if the puddings come back next year then there needs to be a rethink of the news ident.

I suggest either the news version of Snowflake or bring back Ballet and make it a little Christmassy for example change the background so it's snowing or covered in snow and change the music slightly so it sounds Christmassy - maybe sleighbells or something?
