Is it just me, or did it seem a tad disrespectful to introduce the Asia Earthquake News Special tonight on BBC1 at 7.30pm with jolly children bumping around on Xmas pud space hoppers to the jingly jolly Christmas Ident tune???

Why the hell don't the BBC bring back a clock or something and introduce an important programme in a respectul manner.

This goes for any serious news programming at any time of year, with the BBC's current set of silly idents.

What do others think?

They should really have a more serious ident ready for this sort of situation.

We do. It's the Ballet Symbol. However it seems a decision was taken to use the Bouncy Puds instead.

The 'Ribbons', or Family Symbol, is no longer 'available for use'.

I mean it goes to show, what will they use if a major incident happens here and they have to broadcast on all BBC channels?

Each channel will use its own branding.

I too like the 'Ribbons' (Family Symbol), but I think part of the reason it is not to be used on the Public Service Channels any more is because it is used to identify our commercial products. It is probably felt that a distinction between the Public and Commercial areas of the BBC has to be made.

Yeah but what happens if a major national emergency occurs and they can only broadcast 1 channel on to all stations?

Well if you mean all of the BBC channels, I would presume they would do what they did when Princess Diana died and use the phrase 'BBC Television' on all channels, with a static BBC logo.

Also when the Queen Mother died they used the term 'BBC Television News' when Peter Sissons broke the news onto BBC1 and BBC2 and on News 24, and I think all BBC channels. (I remember they showed part of the funeral on CBBC and CBeebies.)

there were all sorts of odd captions and announcements at around 6am on 31 August 1997, which made you sit up and pay attention..

Yeah, didn't they play 'Ha, ha, the witch is dead!' from Wizard of Oz!!!?

Seriously, there was no need for such, "This is BBC Television from London" stuff here, just for the ballet or rooftop ident. I truly am amazed at the decision which has been made on this one.

At one point in time they would have used the Family Symbol. Now it is intended that each channel would use its own branding.

If there were to be a joint News service on all BBC channels, each would introduce the service using its own ident. BBC News 24 would take over from that point. When continuity is once again needed then each channel would use its own ident. In these days of multi-streaming I don't think it would be too difficult

I can't imagine a major national emergency that would destroy all but one Stream coming out of the playout areas of the BBC Broadcast Centre.

If such a national emergency occured, then I think the last thing on the mind of the one remaining network director in existence would be... 'what symbol shall I use to introduce this joint coverage?'

Even a silent version of the Christmas Puds, or better a still from it would have been a vast improvement

The Queen Mother died at the end of March 2002, the day after BBC One introduced the current set of idents, this also being about 6 weeks after the kids channels had launched. Though the kids channels didn't show all of the funeral coverage, they showed it at some important bits such as when they took the silence, I even recall CBeebies presenters mentioning something about it.
