Is it just me, or did it seem a tad disrespectful to introduce the Asia Earthquake News Special tonight on BBC1 at 7.30pm with jolly children bumping around on Xmas pud space hoppers to the jingly jolly Christmas Ident tune???

Why the hell don't the BBC bring back a clock or something and introduce an important programme in a respectul manner.

This goes for any serious news programming at any time of year, with the BBC's current set of silly idents.

What do others think?

Well They wouldn't bring back the clock!
They should have used the ballet dancers. I do love the studio that is being used ( N6??) the background is darker and has PICTURES!! I like that. Very Happy

Yes, it was very inappopriate indeed, you would think that they would have come up with a slide or something to use instead of using the jolly xmas ident, even the normal idents are not suitable IMO.

It is about time that they come up with a News ident like ITV1 used to have when they had the celeb idents, or at the very least a set of BBC News Special Report titles to be used for special programming and when breaking into normal schedules, like the US networks have.

Perhaps they will only change it if people complain, I doubt enough will though.

No, it wasn't at all disrespectful.

Not the first time BBC One has given us a dubiously appropriate ident, I seem to recall the tribute to the recently deceased Thora Hird getting a very sombre anno... over Salsa.

Did the nations use the Christmas puds as well?

I dont think disrespectful was the correct word BUT it wasnt relevant for the introduction before The Great Wave programme and also the DEC appeal straigh afterwards!

PS I think ive still got issues with the 'Great Wave' title aswell. I thought ITV's Tsnami-an ITV News Special was bad but the BBC title seems even worse. (Maybe we are all being a bit oversensitive to the whole situation????)

Well, the ident set as a whole is unsuitable for news programming. In the past though they've used a still image of the ident, or a trailer style end-board with branding from BBC News.

As I said elsewhere, I think a suitable ident to use would be the "Now on the BBC" ident. This is usually used to tell us what's on numerous BBC channels now, but could just have the BBC ONE logo on it and details of the News special.

I immediately felt the ident was inappropriate for the programme. I also found the title was unneeded and dramatised the event. It hardly needed it.

Or maybe a shift towards the Americanism of news over here.

Fox's "KILLER WAVE" is a great example...sounds more like something you'd see in the cinema. Shocked

I don't think anybody still wants the news to be read in a dinner jacket with presenters would say "what a wenderfel bickhend" - but I certainly don't want the awful nature of US news reporting either.

As soon as I saw the Ident I knew there would be a thread!

I don't know why the BBC don't have a generic ident for this kind of thing. A simple black background with text on it and the station logo in the corner, in this case the text saying BBC News Special.

If the disaster had of occurred at any other time of year the Ballet Symbol would have been used, I don't think there is any doubt about that.

The fact that the BBC is so marketing driven now that we cannot lay aside our Christmas branding for half-an-hour in order to treat such programming, and the people caught up in the disaster, with dignity is infuriating.

I suspect that if the decision lay with the folks working in presentation then the Bouncy Puds symbol would not have made an appearance around any news programming over the past few days.
