Nope - they're rear projections.

The NY set makes any presenter who sits in it look bloated and cramped, or is that just Tanya Beckett?

It was my understanding that they were just rotated plasmas fed by DVDs in day and night form.
Or did I just make that up?

I think the Old washington set had rotated plasmas but this has since changed to a projection backdrop.

The old Washington studio only had two views of the capital - nighttime and daytime. Hence the plasmas were rotated to show either view of the Whitehouse.

I think the rotation refers to the fact that the plasmas were used in portrait rather than landscape mode - i.e. they were rotated through 90 degrees.

The three looped shots were shot on a camera also rotated through 90 degrees using a camera mounting.

There were day and night versions - but never one with snow!

The New York and Washington single camera down-the-line studios are both CSO. These are used as remote studios for guests or reporters in Washington or NY, where the interview is being carried out in a different studio (usually a London studio)

However both Washington and New York also have larger studios with more than one camera, used for situations where a presenter is based in the NY or Washington studios. The larger NY studio is used for World Business Report, the larger Washington is used for World News bulletins when they are co-presented from the US, and other special programmes, such as coverage of US elections etc.

The larger studios are both projector, rather than CSO based. In NY there is a single, widescreen projector, fed live from a high definition camera (yep - HD!) on the roof of the APTN/Channel13 building where the BBC Bureau is located. There is also an HD tape machine (a DVHS machine I believe) that can replay a recorded background if the live camera isn't available (or looks silly because of the local weather)

The same roof camera feed is downconverted to 4:3 standard def and used as the CSO background for the CSO down-the-line studio in NY (or a recording of the same feed is used)

Washington has a couple of regular standard def projectors, think they are fed from DVDs - though I may be wrong.

Yeah, cause I was watching a world bullitin on 13, since i live in ny, and there was a snowstorm, and it was sunny in the background, so i was wondering. Do you happen to know if there are tours for the NY bueru, or 13 itself, b/c that is my favorite NY channel.

There are tours of Thirteen - but they seemed to be mainly the people who actually contributed or subscribed to PBS (i.e. donated money to fund the channel) Might be info at www.thirteen.org - their website. The BBC is based in the Thirteen operation - and have taken over the smaller of the Thirteen studios (though Thirteen can also still use it when the BBC aren't)

Not sure how close the Beeb and PBS are likely to remain though - BBC World is now being carried on some US satellite systems - and is on NY cable I believe - so it is no longer exclusive to PBS...

I was shocked at how much sponsorship and other "not quite advertising" had crept onto PBS in the last 5 years - it felt very uncomfortable.

Yeah, the cable thing annoys me. I have directv, and NY has five counties in it, and mine doesn't have cablevision, which is the one with bbc world. I really hope directv signs on to get it. At least I'm in ny, which seems to be the most international american city, so I have more of a chance of getting it.

EDIT: yeah, with the sponsonship, it used to be all nonprofit stuff, but know there are car commercials, but say " We are proud to support PBS"..... Also, happen to like WLIW 21, b/c they have 4 bbc bullitins daily, and an rte one also.

That's interesting - I knew WLIW21 took a few bulletins from BBC World, but I didn't know that they take an RTÉ news programme. Do you know which one? Six-One news?

Spot on. The washington background is made up of a dvd and can be easily switched from night to day by remote control.

How come on this picture the desk is the red and white "lit up" desk like on NEWS 24 and BBC WORLD, but the image on the screen is from the "cream" era?

That is a lovely desk - it would be nice if News 24 had one like that, with the glass top so that they can do away with all the wires and clutter of laptops. I reckon the nationals studio desk should have been more like that, too. The shape they went for in the end just seems..wrong.

Test image, most likely.

Its not on everyday. On sundays and mondays. On sundays it is befor BBC's This Week. I think it is the NIne bulliten, cause it is shown at five.It is part of an Irish-American Newsmagazine called Out of Ireland. I can't wait to go back to dublin in a few weeks. Its been a while since I've been home.
