Are the backgrounds virtual? and are the moving backgrounds taped or live, or is it a real window?

It varies ... sometimes it's a live shot, sometimes it's on tape and not a real window but sometimes the lives are done from the roof in New York and that is real, and sometimes from a roof near the White House which again is real.

Nope - they're rear projections.

The NY set makes any presenter who sits in it look bloated and cramped, or is that just Tanya Beckett?

It was my understanding that they were just rotated plasmas fed by DVDs in day and night form.
Or did I just make that up?

I think the Old washington set had rotated plasmas but this has since changed to a projection backdrop.

A plasma screen, turned around. With hilarious consequences.

The old Washington studio only had two views of the capital - nighttime and daytime. Hence the plasmas were rotated to show either view of the Whitehouse.

This was only the case for the Washington studio and it did look quite bizarre.

The NY studio IIRC was just a static printed backdrop in a little room, or they used the Times Square studio that several other television companies made use of.
