Why do channels need a slogan in the first place? They just sound cheesy and like something a five-year-old would come up with. I think that the channel's name is sufficient, considering that the BBC has worldwide respect as one of the globe's best and most efficient news organisations.

Well, some slogans are extremely appealing and I'm sure they're a good form of publicising the channel (Like the ever-green "Be the first to know" on CNN). I think the best one BBCWorld has had was "Making sense of it all", but "Demand a broader view" was not bad also.
"Putting news first" just does not suit BBCWorld, as the channel features many programmes that are not primarily related to the news. It actually tries to give the viewer a "broader view" of the news.

I actually think the best slogan BBC World ever had was in 2000/2001 - "News, Information and Inspiration". That summed up the channel quite well. I also liked "Making sense of it all". However, the last two have been quite poor.

Is it just me who thinks the new ident looks a bit... well... cheap? Wow - globe moves across screen with circles behind it. It just doesn't seem visually interesting. The only reason for doing it seems to be to tie it in with the recently relaunched titles - and while that's not a bad thing to do at all, these come off looking like a poor imitation rather than something of equal quality.

I honestly would have preferred just a red, glossier version of the previous ident.

I have to agree with you. The music's nice, but that's about it. The visuals look very cheap. Nothing much interesting happens and they don't have the detail that the April 2000 idents had. They were by far the best, in my opinion.

Nothing will ever beat the 2000 ident, that for me was BBC World!

I can't watch BBC World anymore I feel my teeth grinding to replace the 'mechanical grinding noise???' at the start of their bulletins. This from a few minutes ago, 9pm Eastern Time, 2am UK:

Its the tractor cam you hear at the start, not your tv. You hardly hear it on BBC World anyway as its News 24's set.

Yup - the infamous "tractor cam."

Essentially the camera that does the tracking shot around the studio is not the most quiet in the world and that is the noise you hear. If you wish to email them again mention its when they are broadcasting from the News 24 studio rather than their own.

Although at the same time, it seems much louder on there than it normally does so maybe it was a bad day or a bad sound person that day.

Wonderful, isn't it? Something that offers about 4 seconds of footage per hour being the most intrusive thing on the channel (other than the widely-adored Ben Brown that is).

You should count yourself lucky that you only have to put up with it for 4 bulletins per day. News 24 viewers have it all day long!

In some TOTHs though they do turn the music up at the end to try and block it, so they obviously know that its affecting viewers at home!

Perhaps if we all clubbed together we could buy them a can of WD40.

They do usually keep the studio mics down and keep the TOTH titles bed going for longer to cover over the noise. Mustn't have been one of the regulars on the sound on that particular overnight.

The problem is that they will have to live with the noise until the studio gets a re-install. They couldn't feasibly take it out and replace it with anything else at this stage. It gets some nice angles from up there, and is used extensively throughout every day on News 24, not just at the TOTH.
