Is it just me who thinks the new ident looks a bit... well... cheap? Wow - globe moves across screen with circles behind it. It just doesn't seem visually interesting. The only reason for doing it seems to be to tie it in with the recently relaunched titles - and while that's not a bad thing to do at all, these come off looking like a poor imitation rather than something of equal quality.

I honestly would have preferred just a red, glossier version of the previous ident.

I have to agree with you. The music's nice, but that's about it. The visuals look very cheap. Nothing much interesting happens and they don't have the detail that the April 2000 idents had. They were by far the best, in my opinion.

As floored as I was by your highly insightful analysis, I can't say I'm entirely convinced by it. With your permission, I'd like the chance to offer an alternative point of view - if that's not too much, of course... Rolling Eyes

What I was suggesting was not merely recolouring the old ident - simply an adaptation of the idea, in the same way that the latest BBC News titles build on the same idea as the titles they replaced. To me, a globe flying across the screen with circles and a warp effect in the background is not terribly exciting - the ribbons floating around the globe that we saw in the old ID fits in better with the BBC News motif. I think if the polished, glossy look of the new titles were effectively married with that theme, the outcome would be much better.

But that's just my opinion of course - irrationally dismiss it out of hand if you wish.

The ident (and countdown) featured in this video from YouTube was about the best BBC World has had. It was introduced in April 2000 along with the first David Lowe/Lambie-Nairn news idents.

I agree with you.
I actually don't think the ident is really necessary. In my opininion idents and bumpers just make things more disjointed, particularly if they look quite cheap. Plus, I never liked "Putting News First".

I've never felt that they've lived up to that motto. After all, they don't feature golf news at the start of bulletins, do they? Laughing

Seriously, though, they rarely break into scheduled programmes to bring breaking news. Whenever any significant news breaks on BBC News 24, Sky News or CNN, I always flick over to BBC World and if they are not showing a bulletin at the time, the viewer generally has to wait.

Why do channels need a slogan in the first place? They just sound cheesy and like something a five-year-old would come up with. I think that the channel's name is sufficient, considering that the BBC has worldwide respect as one of the globe's best and most efficient news organisations.

And as for breaking news into scheduled programming, why not animate the ticker and the banner on to the screen as a story breaks?
