Don't know if this has been posted elsewhere, but BBC World is to launch a new tv news channel (second language) during the next few months, to serve the Farsi speaking community.

It will feature Farsi speaking presenters and reporters, using current BBC World footage. Not sure where the channel will broadcast from, though. Anyone got any more info?

Does anybody know what graphics package it will take on - BBC News Style or it's Own unique brand, completly seperate?

No, Michelle Fleury presented the NY segments of WBR tonight, although Guto Hari did have a contributing report.

Michelle Fluery is absoluely terrible to watch and to listen to, I can't stand this woman,

Kate Noble is a bit better as a stand-in, IMO. Is Dharshini David still the main WBR anchor in New York?

Hilarious report there by Mike Bushell (Sports Correspondent) being rolled down a hill inside a big inflatable ball, said to emulate a hamster on its wheel. (A new trend from NZ, called "Zorbing", I think).

Bushell's verbal outbursts during the piece were hilarious.

(Although not quite hilarious enough to allow Jonathan Charles to crack that icy exterior so much.....)

I watched the 0900 GMT bulletin as well, James. That was a fabulous report!

I like Jonathan Charles as an anchor because he has a lot of authority. However, it would benefit him to lighten up on some occasions.

Yes, he is good actually. Although is a tad sombre on ocassion, I like his style of presentation.

Also noted that Geeta Guru-Murthy was on yesterday too. I wonder is she is the "old face" that was referred to by one of the correspondents a few posts up the page.

There are so many former BBC World Presenters who have simply vanished off the face of the earth. I would love to know where they have all gone:

Keshini Navaratnam
Carla Garapedian
Linette Tye
Peter Coe
Roger Finn
Melinda Wittstock
Philip Hayton (of course)
John Terrett
Nici Marx

...to name but a few.

Its a Zorb he was in and its not really a new trend if you like... Ive been in one and twas very enjoyable! a must do where ever you are!

As for Jonathan Charles, hes a fantastic presenter and I have seen him laugh and make the odd joke after a story, although by the sounds of this story, it doesnt seem so!

......don't think I could ever be persuaded to be strapped to the inside of that thing, Damo.

One question I have been meaning to ask you guys - you note that some editions of WBR are sponsored by Shell (the Oil Company). There is an insert at the start and end of those sponsored programmes, which shows the silhouette of a woman walking and then sitting down with a tv remote control in hand, she switches the channel - is that silhouette of Manisha Tank? It does remarkably look like it. I have wondered this for ages.

Hmmm. I can't say that I've ever seen WBR being sponsored. Are you watching BBC WORLD from Hotbird, James? Or do you receive it from a different satellite in the Middle East? I know that there are quite wide variations in BBC WORLD from region to region. Maybe WBR is sponsored in the Middle East but not in Europe? I'll look out for it on the European version just in case I've missed it.

On the subject of WBR, it's nice to see the Marketboard sequence make a return. I've always liked the music that accompanies that slide. I noticed that they've dropped the markets/currencies update from BBC News now. They only do it during WBR (which, I suppose, has become more frequenct recently).

The weather forecasts are really beginning to get on my nerves. I timed one yesterday and it was a mere 45 seconds long! I'm watching CNN for the world weather now. Their forecasts are now far superior. I can't understand what one correspondent said earlier about not liking weather on an international news channel. I think it is quite important. If that was the case, why have national forecasts on BBC One? It doesn't tell you in detail what's going on in your region. I enjoy seeing what the weather is doing around the world and it's also very good for looking at potential holiday destinations.

Good to see Geeta back on the channel. Hopefully we'll see more of her. Although, I don't think Geeta is the "old favourite", as that was only mentioned after Geeta came back, IIRC. I'm still puzzled as to who it could be. I hope it is Philip Hayton. He was always very good on BBC WORLD.

The Farsi service won't be launching until 2008 AIUI - it will launch after the Arabic service which is due to launch sometime in 2007 I believe.

The Arabic service is not being produced by BBC TV News (as BBC World's News, BBC News 24 and BBC One/Two News is) - it is being produced by BBC World Service Radio (yep - they are creating a TV, Radio and Online newsroom) - though I suspect it will still fit somewhere within the BBC News branding. AIUI it is not going to broadcast from studios at the News Centre in West London, but will come from a new TV studio proposed for one of the Central London buildings?
