I think world/international weather can work. I find Euronews's top of the hour euro weather which flies across europe really useful. Surely that's something World could do? The thing that I like about Euronews weather is that you get a good view of the map and no distractions from a presenter!
Indeed they are, who is on now? Sally is a good presenter though ive not seen her do news.
Just before I went out yesterday, I saw that Martine Dennis returned at 1000. Interesting to note that Martine was replaced by Lindsey Brancher today (IMO, one of the best anchors at BBC WORLD).
Couple of points about BBC WORLD which I have been meaning to post for a while:
1) I'm really enjoying World News Today. I like the way there is so much emphasis on news with less business and sport. I always feel that in the 25-minute BBC News bulletins throughout the rest of the day, there is not enough time dedicated to news (especially when your region takes two breaks per bulletin). The only thing I don't like is the headlines sequence - restarting the quarter head bed really doesn't sound right. Why can't they use the BBC News head vamp instead? Or the TWT vamp?
2) The weekday presenter rota seems to have changed quite a lot now, due to World News Today launching. Some presenters are on for 4 bulletins, others 3 bulletins and one presenter (usually Nisha Pillai) only seems to be on for 2! It hardly seems worth bringing Nisha in! Couldn't David Eades and Nik Gowing do an extra bulletin each?
3) What have they done with the weather forecasts? They rarely last over 60 seconds and give a very brief look at a couple of regions of the world. If you're very lucky, you get a map. On most occasions, though, they merely show viewers 4 cities! I found a recording of BBC WORLD from 2002 today and the weather forecast with Michael Fish lasted for about 3 minutes or so. They've definitely cut the weather back recently.
There are some more changes coming up, with the return of an old favourite and more editions of WNT planned.
That's interesting - an "old favourite". The only former BBC WORLD presenter I can think of who isn't currently working for another organisation is Philip Hayton. It'd be great if Phil came back. Many of the other former presenters (Adrian Finighan, Stephen Cole, Anita McNaught etc) are working for other news organisations.
Don't know if this has been posted elsewhere, but BBC World is to launch a new tv news channel (second language) during the next few months, to serve the Farsi speaking community.
It will feature Farsi speaking presenters and reporters, using current BBC World footage. Not sure where the channel will broadcast from, though. Anyone got any more info?

You'd have to tell me what the heck "Farsi" is and where it comes from first.

Mike Embley has quite a good job now. His old shift was 2100-0100. He presented two bulletins on his own and shared two bulletins with Katty Kay in Washington (I say 'share' but I think there's slightly more of Washington than London). Since the launch of World News Today at 2100, he only begins presenting from 2200. Furthermore, the 2200 bulletin has been cut in half because of a new edition of Sport Today at 2215. That means he presents 15 minutes on his own and shares two bulletins with Katty Kay. I bet in total he's on screen for about an hour per day.
Yes, although I am not sure if the man himself would call it "good", Rob. He probably prefers being in front of the camera as opposed to sat in the newsroom behind the set..........he still remains remarkably good though. Good solid anchor.
