How is it homophobic though? That word is, sadly, commonly used but hardly ever intended literally. Or am I missing out on some joke?

Try asking that of anyone who has taken abuse because of their sexuality. The word "gay" has been used in the pejorative sense (to mean "lame" and "rubbish") for years.

That doesn't mean it isn't a reflection of homophobic feeling.

Damian has expressed this type of bigoted, hate-filled comment many times.

I am sick of it, and I don't beleive anyone should be leaping to his defense.

Could we please stop with this sh*t?
This is the BBC World thread (I miss the old one, by the way), not the Gay Pride thread.

Anyway to answer James' question in the last post of the old thread
, I don't know about today but Ben Brown has been seen more than Lyse Doucet on the first days of the Middle East crisis. He reported both in the morning and in the evening while she still was in Bombay.

How gay having to post in a thread made by hymaloser.

I've reported your post for homophobia, you rancid little turd.

I am not leaping to Damian's defence (far from it) but how is saying he is a 'rancid litttle turd 'isn't going to help the matter. Why not just post : "I've reported your post for homophobia." But now that added that remark has overpowered his comment in a way and now he wouldn't get ban for that comment.

As for the comment, I could easily take your comment about being a rancid little turd as racist, just as you took Damian's post as homophobic. Both wern't designed to offend in that way.

I don't want to get my head kicked in for this comment, but I am just trying to proove a point. As for Damian, he is just like that. I know he can be very rude. But as the previous poster has pointed out, I think it's best left for the moderators to deal with this.

I'm not in the habit of kicking heads, I assure you.

My particular expression toward Damian is one built from experience and exasperation at repeated comments like this.

He is a bigot. If you want to see the proof then read his posts via his profile.

To allow repeated offensive comments to slide by without comment would be tantamount to tacit approval.

That is a matter for me and my conscience - not just the moderators.

EDIT: And by the way, a "turd" is a jobbie. You might be able to play a semantics argument for Damian, but not for me I assure you.

Alright alright.

Well perhaps now you can learn from Gavin's (oft. repeated) calls for you to stop using "gay" in any other sense than homosexual or perhaps a little bit merry.

I'm sure we can all do that can't we!

For goodess sake will you guys stop wasting space in this thread! If you want to have an argument then do it via PM! Could we please keep this thread ON TOPIC. I wouldn't mind but its only two days old! Hymagumba - thanks for setting it up but you might change the title of the thread - its rather cumbersome! 'BBC World' would be sufficient I think!

Yeah. Presenter rotas are so much more fun.

Disappointed at the lowered tone, my friends. As the correspondent said above, let's try to keep on topic.

I saw Ben Brown live on World last night, hosting a very News 24-esque slot live from Beirut Port, watching several Britons boarding a RN Vessel to Cyprus. It was, of course, good television, but not for BBC World viewers, as it seemed very lopsided in the sense "we care only about the British".

International viewers care not too much for this slightly tabloid approach, which should really be relegated to News 24 and domestic audiences. No offence intended here, by the way.

World stayed with this particular spot for almost a full hour.

Lyse Doucet, on the other hand, continued to be excellent on the spot in Haifa. Anchoring and linking to various other correspondents in the area.

were there any other interesting evacuations occurring at the time?

Perhaps not, Hyma, but there were other newsworthy events taking place right at the same time that would have made more sense to the average BBC Viewer, such as a live news conference by Condoleeza Rice that CNN carried, and there was even another Mandela conference in Joburg at the same time.
