On public holidays I always expect to see rarely seen young presenters, but but every time I'm proved to be wrong: during the last three days BBC World featuerd some of its longest serving and most experienced presenters doing weekend-long shifts: Nik Gowing, Nisha Pillai, Mishal Husain, a rather tired-looking Lyse Doucet and Alastair Yates, who did a 10-hour long overnight shift last night and is still on air tonight.

At the end of every year BBC WORLD schedule is disrupted. Why is it that way? In the US on BBC AMERICA before WNA the announcer says BBC WORLD News America will be back on january 2, 2008. I think that will put regular viewers away especially in the US. That program is produce mainly for the American market from Washington . After all, major political developments are coming up in the US next week. This week is really important to the lead up. Why come back on the day of the primaries when they should have lead the viewers to the primary night and promoted the program as an alternative to the America News channels. Most people who watch the BBC here are loyal fans including me. It is like a ritual when I get from work and school. These 10 or so days may seem short but viewing habits can change quickly.
AJI and the other news channels always seem to manage their schedule and no holiday will affect their output. If it was christmas eve /christmas day; new year eve/ new years day, that affected the schedule, that will be reasonable, not 11 to 12 days of disruption.

Outside of major disasters, News is driven by politics, business, press offices and the legal system; so with most of these on holiday in the northern hemisphere not alot is left to report.
A reduction in service is quite acceptable as most things that are of news 'value' in the west are just not functioning. News does not magically happen.
AJI is on air without much change as it in not a western driven news operation - many of the stories it would lead on normally are still ongoing. Of course xmas is not a holiday in the middle east!!
And, in any case, if there are any major US political developments during these 10 days, they will still be covered by BBC World. It's just you won't have a dedicated programme for US viewers. Anyway, pre-September 2007 you only got a semi-dedicated programme (i.e. Washington/London co-pres) and pre-2002, you only got what the rest of us get around the world - a normal BBC News bulletin.

I agree with you there, they put such emphasis on the launch of the programme and now they've scrapped it on a very important week for US politics.

That was what I was trying to say. When BBC launch the program back in october they focused on politics and the built up to the US Primaries in January. They wanted to give an outsiders view of the process. This is the last scretch here. You don't go away. I thought when Matt was off the last week and the half and Katty was in, he was on Holiday to be back just in time for the first Primary vote in Iowa. To my surprise he will be off for almost 3 weeks. No US Tv personality will do that. It is like Wolf Blitzer from CNN leaving for 3 weeks and then coming for Election day coverage. Audiences in the US like to see reporters and Anchors on the ground covering and reporting the story. I know he is not a TV star in the US by any means comparable to Wolf or the network stars but I thought he was the face for the BBC political coverage in the US.

Almost every one is on holiday how will they cover it effectively. This was the same time when the Tsunami happened and news channels were caught off guard. I thought the program was made specifically for the US audience on BBC AMERICA. BBC AMERICA is helping with most of the funding if I were them I will be mad. The program serves as a lead into primetime if you are not getting a certian figure your primetime will suffer for 2 weeks around the holidays. I am sure there are serious commercial and business opportunity that needs to be address.
