Seeing as no-ones mentioned it, Matt Frei is to host the new BBC World News America bulletin with Katty Kay effectively swapping places with him. October 1st also sees the start of the new overnight World News Today with Philippa Thomas in Washington, the overnight presenter and someone else.

I've only seen it briefly today, but it seems like a step backwards. As harshy said, nothing will beat the April 2000-December 2001 breakfiller; that had an excellent design with useful information and superb music. The September 2003-September 2007 one was good in its own way, though the music was not brilliant. At least it contained plenty of useful information all the time it was on: now/next info, schedules, promos, time, weather, markets, on this day etc. With the new one, you only get one of those at a time, which is not as effective. I'm also sad that the countdown to the end of the commercial break has been dropped. That was arguably the most useful aspect of the breakfiller: it told you how long you had to make a cup of tea before the programme resumed! Come to think of it, that's probably why they've ditched it. They know it meant people could channel-hop or leave the room and not watch the adverts!

Strange. Here in the Middle East (technically '"Asia"), we are still getting the old breakfiller. Nothing at all has changed.
Indeed Robert, if I were to be perfectly honest, I much preferred the simple no-nonsense breakfiller of the late nineties, just at the junction between the flags era and the new style BBC news pres.
The music was also fantastic.

When it was first announced (I think by you) that the breakfiller had changed, I checked on the European version of BBC World and they were still using the old breakfiller. It was only yesterday that I first saw it on the Europe feed. I suspect the Middle East will change soon.
On a separate note, does anyone else think the BBC Weather is too short? When I first watched BBC World in 2000 and until about 2005, the weather forecasts were decent - fairly long, and covered several areas of the world in depth. Now, though, they are a mere 45 seconds long and only briefly cover three regions, sometimes even without a map! I fully understand, as I was told by BBC World Customer Relations, that an international news channel is not the best place to look for weather, however, it is nice to find out what's happening around the world, especially in areas where friends/relatives live and places you like going to on holiday. I really think BBC World should decide to either beef up the forecasts again or scrap them altogether, as currently they are practically worthless.

Interesting cos when they go to breaks on BBC World, and Asia Pacfic don't in the background in the gallery you can still see the old one playing on a screen, I wonder why your Asian region hasn't changed.

Well u are right. The weather is so short. It is a mere 35 seconds. Before 2005 it was comprehensive and detailed, now due to them selling more commercials during the breaks they had to cut the weather. I always disliked the weather on news channels. I remember BBC WORLD did a survey in 2005. They wanted to know what people taught about weather on international news channels and i guess a lot of people dislike the idea. Since then they shorten the weather. Their major competitor goes crazy about the weather and huriccane.

Yep, I find the current weather forecasts too short and pointless at the end of 2005 they were fairly long and detailed, but now it feels like they last about 30seconds. And a new weather sting is needed!

Totally agree re weather.. just headline, temperatures and a plug for the site. Ever seen France 24? That really looks good. Presenter out of vision. When there's so little time to talk about stuff the presenter just gets in the way.
