After twenty years at BBC World, Nik Gowing is to step back from regular news presenting on the channel. He will continue to present ad-hoc segments, and - one would imagine - World Debates, and other special broadcasts.

It's a shame. And now means that following the recent departure of Martine Dennis, Peter Dobbie now becomes the longest serving continuous presenter on the Channel.

All the best, Nik.

That leaves yet another slot to fill on the channel - will be interesting to see if they bring in any new names. I'm not really surprised about Nik though - he appears to have been demoted recently, with Jon Sopel usually treated as the 'lead/senior' presenter.

Well he's been sharing that slot with Geeta Guru Murphy so I'd imagine she'll just do them all week.

Is Mike Embley and Zeinab Badawi in the long-serving league?

Murthy, to be sure, to be sure.

Myan: Mike started mid to late late 90's on World, mainly at weekends. And often paired with his then regional cohort, Gwennan Edwards!

Zeinab Badawi started around the year 2000/2001, if I'm not mistaken.

And Peter Dobbie, contrary to what I stated above, was in fact the longest ever serving BBC World presenter, having started before Nik and Martine in fact. Peter has been there since the early 80's, when the channel was still known as BBC World Service Television.

I think you mean early 90's as BBC World Service Television launched in 1991.

Mike Embley started at BBC World in about 1995 but had a break to present Newsroom South East before returning to BBC World in 2001.

Zeinab - I can't remember her presenting in 2000 or 2001. She certainly wasn't around at the time of the 9/11 attacks. The earliest I remember her on World was from about 2002/03 onwards.

Zeinab was at ITN/ Channel 4 around 2000/01 I believe.

I wonder how old is Peter Dobbie. He seems to have aged quite a bit over the years.
I know Mike is in his 50s.
We can see how they look like in their younger days if we look through some vintage news footage featuring either of them on Youtube. I saw one clip of Peter in a blooper moment, where he burst laughing on air from reading some humorous news. This was quite some time back, I can't manage to locate that on youtube now. Indeed that was in his much much younger days, I don't think he'd do that now.

Nik's final day is Wednesday, 7th May 2014. At 11am UK time/10am GMT, and half an hour later for the simulcast (if that still happens?)

End of an era.
