Merry Christmas to some of you and Happy New Year to all of you who participate in the BBC World thread. Let's hope 2009 continues to be a good year for World! Thanks to all the producers, reporters, technical staff, camerapeople, editors, bureau staff, correspondents and wonderful anchors (those behind the desk, those in helicopters and those who do both)................

2008 was a great year for World, they made some big changes and all of them were a huge success, something that doesn't happen often these days.
Merry Christmas Very Happy

I echo your sentiments! Is the guy in the third picture who I think it is?

Could it be ........... could it possibly be.... A Yates? It is great to see his photograph on the net (if it is him!) but his fans want to see him on the box. I have been waiting all week to see him present and .... nothing.
BBC World, where is he? The missing link!

All we got is James Dag...., a poor substitute. However, Maryam was great!

Taken from Wikipedia:

Quote:
Although the BBC World News studio produces output in 16:9 SDTV in line with the rest of BBC News, the channel is currently transmitted in 4:3. The news output is converted into a 14:9 frame for both digital and analogue broadcasting, resulting in black bands at the top and bottom of the screen. There are plans to offer the channel in 16:9 in 2008.

As you say, that's good news. I suppose it makes aspect ratios one less thing to worry about in BBC News, as well as other people complaining about them on the forum!

Anyone else getting sick of the BBC World set? The camera work is sloppy, the angles are horrible, the colour balance is going all out on the cameras.

The one thing that really bugs me is the angles... I hate how the height of the camera is higher than the presenter and the camera faces down towards the head... i don't know if thats how it is but it feels like it and I really hate it. The height of the camera has to be the same as the persons head imo.

Few examples... (oh and why no red lights now? looks crap without them)

sorry for the rant but Dateline London just last hour showed how crappy its become.

Damo! Damo! Relax. Have a glass of something! Or even two.

I agree about the red lights - are you referring to the red illuminations that used to appear at the junction between the glass wall and the Barco wall? I knew something was different about the set but wasn't quite sure what it was. You are indeed correct - it looks worse without those red splashes.

Otherwise, I still quite like it. However, I think there are too many camera angles used, almost as if it is an episode of Moonlighting! That aside, I enjoy the presentation.

Who is that alongside Peter Dobbie - is it Martine D? When was that?

Yep the red lights on the wall, and yep Martine, from a BBC News hour just after they started lol

My partner always comments when I am glued to World that depending on the crop of the particular shot, the partial segments of the frosted glass "BBC Logo Circles" on the glass behind reminds of the sails of a Chinese Junk in Kowloon Harbour!

You have to watch out for it carefully, but he is right! One of the standard head-on shots reveals just a small crop of the frosted markings, and it does look like sails from one of those boats.

In your foto above, Damo, it is part of the panel that is directly behind Peter Dobbie's head!

I'm not sick of the set, it's probably the best set out of all news channels, at least to me.
Can't wait to see World in 16:9. Very Happy

Yes, Damo. THAT thing. Although it looks even more like a sail in a slightly different angle. LOL.
