BBC Four currently showing an extra 10 minutes of WNT. We got BBC Four promos while BBC WN went to a break. Then the headlines, and a sting which I haven't seen before, followed by a debate....

Happens every Thursday for some reason.

Hmm, Nik Gowing in Mumbai and Martine in London for the usual simulcast at 5am. But they used the WNT bed and normal World News titles and Nik refered to it as WNT... maybe he did so because of the bed? lol

Nisha is normally sent out for Indian special events. However, enjoyed the programme with Nik and Martine this morning. Glad to see they have also dispensed with that messy split screen ending of the programme featuring the main anchor and the business presenter. The new closing is much better (i.e. a wide shot of the studio with both presenters in view - one seated and one standing at the lectern.) Never understood the split screen closure before.

I had a feeling that when Nik was covering the story as it was first breaking on WNT and kept referencing that he'd been in Mumbai just three weeks earlier, that he was going to lobby to get himself sent there to cover it as soon as his shift was over.

Looks like it happened.

Alastair Yates was doing TWT (or whatever it's called now) today as well. I agree that he's an excellent presenter.

I agree that Alastair is excellent. He's got a nice voice, and great, scholarly persona on camera. He's rock solid for breaking news.

However, and I don't know if its just me because I'm not British, but his accent is hard for me to understand. He mumbles. If there is any reason his screen time has been reduced (or why he's been mainly on overnights for so long), its because of this. The other serial mumblers are David Jessel and Lindsay Brancher.

Everyone else, I understand clearly.

(BTW, while this is a new user name for me, I used to post regularly on this forum 3-4 years ago. I can't remember/find/ the old username).

They have used this shot (camera/broadcast unit etc) for all the links across BBC News. Why is the quality so bad? Is this just a webcam broadcast through laptop and mobile broadband or is it a proper OB unit that is having trouble getting a signal? On occasion, the pictures freezes for up to 10 seconds before it catches up with the sound again. Cheers!

The bulletin earlier with Lyse Doucet in London and Ben Brown in Bombay was thrilling to watch, for all the wrong reasons though! Several explosions going off whilst Ben was doing his pieces to camera. Quite scary television, actually.

Knowing that area of Bombay, I am amazed at the proximity to which the reporters and camera crews and the general public are being allowed close to the hotel. I am struggling to understand why a wider exclusion zone hasn't been set up. The camera crews all appear to be right on the doorstep and choking the nearby side streets.

There are very strict rules and regulations in India about which foreign broadcasters can use sat trucks etc. Hence why a lot of broadcasts for both BBC, Sky and ITN are using broadband technology/other technology to have correspondents live. ITN's signal on News at Ten was quite poor as well.

BBC World News, has been intresting to watch, for the Mumbai coverage.
They've simulcasted alot with the BBC News Channel.
I was suprised to see, that they never created any special idents, even though they were continuously showing BBC News Specials.
This year, they haven't made any special idents, except for the US Elections.

With there Mumbai covergage, i found they were very slow with producing new reports. They kept using the same one's for hours, which is very strange, considering this is a Breaking News Story.
Also, i noticed they were quite slow to respond to Breaking News.

In my opinion, they had better coverage, than Al Jazeera English, and CNN, but Sky News was probably the best and most informative to watch.
Overall, although the presentation was good, it could have been better.
