Alastair Yates was doing TWT (or whatever it's called now) today as well. I agree that he's an excellent presenter.

At the risk of having my head chopped off by someone here, I would like to point out that BBC World doesn't realy have a crop of "young things" anchoring their bulletins. I mean, most of the news presenters are of the "mature" variety, and I am so much pleased that they are! I think it adds to the gravitas at the channel and it's one of the reasons why BBC World is a trusted name in rolling news. It's presenters are all received credibly by the audience.

Nik Gowing, George Alagiah, Mike Embley, Zeinab Badawi, Nisha Pillai, Kirsty Lang, Lyse Doucet, Martine Dennis, Peter Dobbie, Alastair Yates, Susan Osman, Tanya Beckett, Juliette Foster, Jamie Robertson, - they have all been broadcasting for years!!!!! None of them are teenagers, I am pleased to say. So, I feel that BBC World doesn't bow to the young and hip brigade that would pass off for fashionable news presentation these days.

Of course, that's not to say that some of the younger presenters (Lucy, Mishal, Martine, Janat, James, Owen, Geeta, Sally B..........................etc.) are any less professional.

Have I dug a hole for myself?

You did? Oh right!

Well here it is for people who haven't heard, they mustn't be using it much then if they've been using it for a over a month.

Hmmm just sounds like a BBC News theme, rather than World. It also doesn't use the World '2-note motif' - maybe they're phasing that out, in order to make BBC News and World News indistinguishable... If so, the countdown will be next.

Possibly. Previous was much better with the motif in my opinion.

Nope. I agree completely.

I absolutely agree. Almost every presenter for BBC World News is very professional. Both young and old presenters. Older presenters however do have better experience, the younger presenters can almost be matched to the older experienced presenter's skills.

Overall, both young and old presenters are professional, but when it comes to experience, the older presenters are better.
But i have to say, Mishal Hussain is just as good as any older presenter in my opinion. Smile

Absolutely - you're quite right. Despite me making my point in a BBC World thread I was really talking about domestic news - and the specific case in point of the overnight service on BBC News/BBC World. BBC World - in this and many other things - is the last bastion for a more grown-up, serious news environment.

I was merely trying to explain why Alastair Yates was gradually disappearing from view.

LOL. Thanks, Bob.

In fact, watching the overnights just now on World with Alistair Yates proved to reinforce our sentiments. He is indeed a very good, experienced broadcaster. And, as if to continue the trend, the duty newscaster on BBC World this morning is none other than the veteran David Jessel!!

It's the first time I am seeing David Jessel behind the BBC World newsdesk for almost a year or so. Good to see him back.

Seemed to me that the intro of the 0000GMT bulletin featured the old times' thunderclaps. I might be competely wrong though.

Thank you BBC WORLD, Bob, LOL et al. This has turned into a good debate. I agree with all the sentiments expressed and the "bright young things " are not necessarily unprofessional but in my original comment I suggested that the older, more experienced presenters were NOT "IN YOUR FACE" as SOME of the younger set tend to be. By that I mean a distinctly aggressive tinge which occasionally manifests itself through courtesy of body language and tone of voice. That is why I described Alastair Yates (and indeed George A, David Jessel, Julian Marshall, Lyse Doucet, Martine Dennis, etc) as MELLOW in their presentation.

I think standards are very high on BBC WORLD but originally i was trying to get feed back on the scarcity of A Yates on the schedules in recent months and I wondered whether his wearing specs had had anything to do with it. Incredibly, he subsequently appeared every day or night last week from the Wednesday/Thursday overnight broadcast until Sunday evening 19.00 gmt. So I was very happy.

The whole weekend line-up was excellent: Alastair, Peter D, Julian M, David Jessel, Tony Campion). I hope there is a repeat!

BBC World played a random sting thing before the sport... it was like the end of the normal TOTH titles, but no text, logos or globe, just the orange lines in an orb thing.

Does anyone else miss the old titles?? I miss them followed by 'This is BBC News from BBC World' and the old headline music....

They've changed the weather a bit... still, as useless as ever though!
